There are still months until Kamigawa Neon Dynasty releases as the next Standard-legal Magic The Gathering set, but the earliest days of preview and spoiler season have already arrived. True spoiler season won’t really kick off until late January, but the most recent article about the set spilled the beans on the set’s first planeswalker.

When Magic: The Gathering releases Kamigawa Neon Dynasty in early 2022, there are going to be tons of new cards to explore and some returning favorites from the old days of Kamigawa. One of the confirmed new additions is going to be a three-mana planeswalker named Kaito Shizuki who seems to have some deadly potential.

Three-mana planeswalkers are always worth keeping an eye on and Kaito certainly seems to be poised to deliver some big hits when it arrives on board early, assuming players are able to protect it. The blue/black card is able to spit out unblockable ninjas, phase out to protect itself, offer some card advantage, and even tutor if players are able to reach the ultimate ability.

“We begin Kaito's story when he is just 16 years old, journeying in his duty to track down a mysterious metal-armed man who attacked the emperor of Kamigawa. Learn what he learns and follow his quiet footsteps with the two-part Magic origin story of his journey, available now—with even more to discover in the complete Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty story next year.”

Obviously Kaito’s real power level will be determined by the Magic meta in which it finds itself, so it will be very interesting to see what other blue and black cards arrive in the set to help stage a powerful archetype that Kaito could easily slot into in the Standard metagame. It will be a while before that becomes clear, but deckbuilders are likely already hard at work brewing up ideas for Kaito in Standard and any other format.

That covers just about everything we know at this point concerning Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, but definitely check back in throughout the holidays and in early 2022 for a lot more details. Game Rant will continue to provide updates, news, and strategy guides as more information about the set is revealed throughout the new year.

Magic: The Gathering is available now in game shops or digitally on Magic Arena.
