Magic: The Gathering players are likely disappointed that the game's 2020 Spring set has been delayed due to Covid-19 concerns. Many were looking forward to getting their hands on the new set to build up decks for when they are able to go to their local game shops again. However, not all Magic: The Gathering news is upsetting right now. As it turns out, the anticipated Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set will introduce the King of Monsters himself, Godzilla.

This crossover is not the first in the game's history. Magic: The Gathering has a long record of releasing promotional cards in partnership with Hasbro, seeing franchises like Transformers, Nerf, and even My Little Pony make appearances. These cards typically have silver borders — rendering them illegal in tournaments and official events — but are highly sought after for their novelty and unique rules. Take the Legendary Creature, Grimlocke, Dinobot Leader, which requires players to transform a real Transformers toy to use one of its abilities.

This collaboration with Toho will see iconic kaiju from the Godzilla franchise introduced to Magic: The Gathering. There will be 16 unique Godzilla Series Monster cards in English with another three being Japanese exclusives, adding up to 19 total monsters. In addition, these cards will be lacking in the silver border many crossover cards have, meaning they are completely tournament legal. The cards will be available in both Magic: The Gathering and Magic: The Gathering Arena.

While the cards won't appear in draft booster packs, players can get Godzilla, King of the Monsters by purchasing a draft booster pack display from a Wizards Play Network store. One random Godzilla Series Monster card will appear in each sealed draft booster pack display, and Ikoria: Lair of Behemoth Collector Boosters will contain 2 random Godzilla Series Monster cards. Players who purchase a bundle of six or more Ikoria: Lair of Behemoth booster packs will receive the Godzilla Series Monster cards as card styles.

The inclusion of these iconic kaiju will certainly open up a new world of possibilities. Players can look forward to building a commander deck featuring their favorite monster, or maybe even include the kaiju in a powerful tribal deck. No matter how they choose to include them, players can expect these creatures to pack a big punch.

While waiting for the delayed physical release, players may want to consider picking up Magic: The Gathering Arena to try out the Godzilla kaiju a month early. Patient fans may be inclined to wait to get their hands on the real cards. Whether it's online or on the table, these kaiju are guaranteed to sow destruction.

Magic: The Gathering Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths is slated for release in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan on April 17th, and May 15th for all other regions.
