The third and final season of the ongoing Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story series has been delayed, the series’ website announced on Monday. The season was scheduled to release at the end of 2021, but will instead debut during the Spring 2022 season.

The anime series is based on a game spin-off of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise developed by f4samurai and published by Aniplex in 2017. The game was developed for Windows, Android, and iOS. An English version was released in 2019 but shut down operations in 2020.

A manga adaptation by Fujino Fuji currently runs in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine, with 4 collected volumes released since 2019. A spin-off manga, Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story – Another Story, started serialization in HouBunsha’s Comic Fuz magazine in 2019, and has amassed 2 collected volumes since then.

The first anime series aired during the Winter 2020 Season, running for 13 episodes. Studio Shaft returned to work on the series, with Kenjirou Okada, Yukihiro Miyamoto, Midori Yoshizawa, and animation troupe Gekidan Inu Curry, directing various episodes. Funimation streamed the series as it aired in Japan, with Crunchyroll and HIDIVE streaming it a week later.

The second series, The Eve of Awakening, aired during the tail-end of the Summer 2021 Season, running for 8 episodes. Miyamoto and Gekidan Inu Curry returned to direct, as did most staff and the main cast. The final season, Dawn of a Shallow Dream, will again be produced by Shaft, though the staff for the series is currently unknown.

The original Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime aired in 2011, running for 12-epiosdes. The series was directed by Yukihiro Miyamoto and Akiyuki Shinbo, and inspired a myriad of manga adaptations and spin-offs to go alongside games and novels.
