The Mafia 1 remake is set to be a big release as it rebuilds the mechanics of the first entry of the franchise from the ground up. It has been eighteen years since the original release of the game and as a result, this remake is set to be a vast improvement on the original graphics. However, the game does not seem to be a direct copy of the original and with Mafia: Definitive Edition casting new actors and reportedly having an open-world, fans are eager to see what this remaster brings to the story.

The original Mafia game focuses on Tommy Angelo who is a taxi driver that becomes involved in a criminal underworld during prohibition. The game follows Tommy over eight years and like the cinematic inspirations behind the game, the title is a long epic that infuses plenty of gunfighting. Fans have had to wait longer than expected for the game, as Mafia: Definitive Edition has faced delays, but they finally got to see what they had been waiting for today.

The 4k gameplay reveal of Mafia: The Definitive Edition is impressive and it showcases the mission "A Trip To The Country." Immediately the visual upgrade is evident but also the way the game handles seems to be smoother. This mission integrates investigation with a shoot-out and the duck and cover elements that are commonly found in action-based games are present. While it was noted that the players would see different shooting accuracy, a lot of viewers commented that Tommy Angelo could reload in a split second contrary to his characterization. Despite this consistency issue, the gameplay has been seen by many in a positive light.

Chief Creative Officer, Haden Blackman, has explained that the remaster has been made with the same engine as that of Mafia 3, but this may cause some concerns for fans. The already released Mafia: Definitive Edition games (particularly 2) have had a lot of glitches and bugs. As a result, these titles have not been enjoyed in the way that they were originally and some have accused the games of being unfinished. With this in mind, fans may need some convincing about the quality of this remake.

While the other games included in the Mafia Definitive Trilogy were not built from the ground up, fans will worry that issues will carry over into what could be a fantastic title. With that in mind, this may be one of the rare instances where a series being uneven in terms of quality may benefit the release of one of its titles. The outlook for the Mafia 1 remake looks positive and many will hope that it overcomes the issues of the other remasters in the collection.

Mafia Trilogy is in development for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
