The secret behind the 6th layer was the everlasting question of Made in Abyss and at long last, the 2nd season covers the beginning of the final descent into the mysterious depths below. The announced title, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, offers a small hint of what’s to come, but for those too excited to wait, here is a brief look at what to expect from the 2nd season of Made in Abyss.
The series covers Riko and Reg’s adventure into the mysterious Abyss which becomes more and more dangerous until reaching the unknown 6th layer. Ascending each layer comes with its special curse, and coming up from the 6th layer results in death. For that reason, little is known about the 6th layer. At long last, the long-anticipated secrets of the Abyss will finally be revealed.
Shift in Focus
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun directly follows the events from Made in Abyss Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul which covered the events in the 5th layer. There, Riko and Reg faced off against the cruel and immoral acts committed by fellow humans in the name of research.
The 1st season of Made in Abyss focused on the dangers presented by the creatures lurking in the abyss. The subsequent movie shifts to facing off against fellow humans. Once again, the new season will shift its focus. The cast will explore the Golden City and its inhabitants, forming bonds while navigating the strange civilization that has been established in the 6th layer.
The World of Narehate
During the Made in Abyss movie Dawn of the Deep Soul, the horrific experiments being conducted by Bondrewd come to light. After sending test subjects down into the 6th layer, when retrieving them, the curse transforms them into horrific, beast-like creatures. These are known as the Narehate.
The Narehate in reality are creatures that have lost their humanity, often resulting in amorphous blobs of flesh and little to no intelligence. However, a select few Narehate can keep their mind intact despite the transformation. Bondrewd and Nanachi are two examples of this. The exact reason for this is unknown, leaving the exact nature of Narehate a mystery.
The descent into the 6th layer is accompanied by a graveyard of Bondrewd’s failed experiments, the Narehate. At the end of their descent, the cast enters the world filled with Narehate. This leads to a whole array of interesting characters all with their unique bodies. Also, these Narehate are not the subject of Bondrewd’s experiments and look wildly different from the amorphous, unintelligent blobs of flesh previously shown to us.
New Dangers
The World of Narehate comes with a whole set of new dangers. Upon arrival to the 6th layer, Riko and her companions are greeted by these Narehate and the world they inhabit. To survive, they will have to co-exist with these strange alien-like creatures.
Navigating a strange new world comes with its own set of troubles, but surviving in an incredibly strange city filled with Narehate comes with a different set of challenges. Unsurprisingly, Made In Abyss is jam-packed with incredibly strange scenery and monsters. This continues into the Golden City features in the 2nd season.
The Golden City is just as strange as its inhabitants, complete with its strange new language and laws. Riko and her crew will have to navigate this foreign city and all its rules to survive in the incredibly dangerous 6th layer. On top of all the monsters, this will prove to be an entirely new challenge for the cast.
Reg’s Past Becomes Clearer
Since the beginning, Reg has had a mysterious past. Ending up on the 1st layer of the Abyss, Riko encounters an unconscious Reg who has amnesia. Together they venture into the Abyss not only to uncover the mysteries surrounding the Abyss but also to figure out just who Reg is. Supposedly coming from the 7th layer, the secrets surrounding his origin will likely lead to larger revelations in the story.
The 2nd season of Made in Abyss will feature a character that claims to have known Reg before he lost his memories. This character will help reveal some of his past along with whom this strange person was before ascending the Abyss.
The Mystery of the 6th Layer Unfolds
Filled with the intelligent Narehate, the civilization established within the 6th layer holds a ton of answers. The oldest citizens hold memories from their journeys deep into the Abyss long ago. This goes as far back as some of the first delvers of the Abyss. These ancient figures impart some of their wisdom to Riko along with the secrets behind the 6th layer and its Golden City.
