Madden 23 is on the precipice, which means that the internet is currently arguing over the player ratings coming in the latest installment of the NFL licensed simulation series. Every NFL season, there are always rookies who may have struggled for one reason or another, who take their year of experience and use it to elevate them to a breakout sophomore year.

There are also guys like the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jamarr Chase or Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons who broke out as true NFL superstars in their rookie seasons and proved from the beginning that they belong in Madden.

8 Penei Sewell (OT, Detroit Lions)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Penei Sewell

Unless someone loves the game of football or is a former offensive lineman, chances are they didn't pay attention to how well a rookie like Penei Sewell played. There were some initial concerns with Oregon's Sewell moving to right tackle, but he managed to take on the duty and showcase why he was considered a generational talent.

People aren't expecting much from the Detroit Lions, but regardless of how many games they win, Sewell will likely stand out as one of the best players in the league as he ascends to Top 10 consideration with hopefully a second full year of stellar play. His rookie year was impressive enough that he was gifted an overall of 80 in Madden 23.

7 Zach Wilson (QB, New York Jets)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Zach Wilson

There's no denying that the 2021 NFL Draft Class was filled with quarterback talent, and fans are waiting to see which guys in the class breakout in their second seasons. Zach Wilson has been surrounded by offensive talent across the board in New York, and the Jets are hoping he takes the next step.

Whether or not he remains a 73 overall in Madden 23 will be determined by if he can prove the doubters wrong. A huge knock on him coming out of college is that he never faced tough competition and didn't prove himself against the best. The NFL is filled with superstars, and fans of the green and white are hoping Wilson ascends to that level in 2022.

6 DeVonta Smith (WR, Philadelphia Eagles)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Devonta Smith

DeVonta Smith is in an interesting place in 2022. During his rookie year, he showed flashes of his Heisman trophy-winning ability at the wide receiver position. What hurt both him and the Philadelphia Eagles was a lack of depth and talent around him at that position.

The Eagles recently traded for superstar wide receiver AJ Brown from the Tennessee Titans, which will likely ease the burden on Smith and help him see more single coverage. As long as Jalen Hurts continues to improve at the quarterback position, Smith's Madden 23 rating of 83 won't stay that way for long.

5 Rashod Bateman (WR, Baltimore Ravens)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Rashod Bateman

The Baltimore Raven's success is largely in Lamar Jackson's hands, as his performance often dictates what type of run the team can make in any given year. Jackson has needed receiving weapons since his rookie year, and 2nd-year pro Rashod Bateman is looking to deliver a consistent target that new Arizona Cardinal Marquise Brown failed to do.

Considering Bateman played sparingly in 2021, it's surprising that he was given a 77 overall in Madden 23. If Jackson and Bateman truly connect during the 2022 season, the chances of Bateman's overall landing in the low 80s is quite probable.

4 Justin Fields (QB, Chicago Bears)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Justin Fields

The Chicago Bears have been the focus of sports media this NFL offseason as critics believe the team failed to surround quarterback Justin Fields with talent. In reality, he has players around him on offense that can go a long way in helping him take the next step. A new offensive coordinator and scheme focused on a run-establishing bootleg offensive can take advantage of Fields' athleticism.

A 74 overall for Fields in Madden 23 is fair, considering he held the ball too long and had an elongated release during his rookie campaign, but both of those issues have reportedly been fixed by Fields during the offseason, so there's hope that he does, in fact, make the sophomore leap.

3 Javonte Williams (RB, Denver Broncos)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Javonte Williams

Both Denver Broncos and Fantasy Football Managers became frustrated in 2021 as they saw the backfield split carries between veteran running back Melvin Gordon and phenom rookie Javonte Williams. Williams quickly showcased the tough-as-nails running style that helped him shed an ungodly amount of tackles.

Training camp reports indicate he is set to be the number one back this season, a reality in which his 82 overall in Madden 23 will see a bump or two.

2 Rashawn Slater (OT, Los Angeles Chargers)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Rashawn Slater

As mentioned with Penei Sewell, offensive linemen tend to be overlooked early in their career because their play is never as exciting as skill positions. The truth is that Rashawn Slater came into the league as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers and immediately established himself as a 10-year starter who will hopefully protect budding superstar quarterback Justin Herbert for the foreseeable future.

An 84 overall in Madden 23 is pretty stout, but if he builds on his rookie year, he can potentially flirt with a rating in the high 80s, which could result in a 90-overall or higher rating in next year's Madden entry.

1 Trevor Lawrence (QB, Jacksonville Jaguars)

Madden 23 Ratings 2nd Year Trevor Lawrence

It's baffling that the quarterback considered the best prospect at his position possibly ever landed on a team with whom many now consider to be the most dysfunctional coach in NFL history. The alleged reports surrounding former head coach Urban Meyer make it clear that Trevor Lawrence had no chance of succeeding in his rookie year. Doug Pederson is now at the helm of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and if Lawrence is as good as advertised, his Madden 23 rating of 76 will feel like a distant memory everyone looks back at humorously.

Madden 23 is set to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on August 15, 2022.
