Work is ongoing for the newest Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web and that work might have just confirmed the role that star Dakota Johnson is taking on. There has been some guesses on just which version of Madame Web Johnson will play but a recent set video seemed to confirm what fans had only been guessing at so far.

As the work for the Spider-Man spinoff film continues more and more info about the upcoming movie is starting to hit the web. That includes the addition of actors like Severance's Adam Scott. However, for the most part, while the cast has been getting those official additions, there isn't a ton known about who the actors will be playing. Still, the biggest mystery surrounding the flick is just who Johnson will be.

While it still hasn't been confirmed yet, the Twitter account Dakota Johnson Updates got its hands on a new set video that seemed to confirm to Madame Web comic book fans that the actress is going to be playing Julia Carpenter. That assumption is based on the fact that Johnson can be seen in the short clip wearing a long red leather jacket.

Speculation has swirled for months that Johnson would either be playing Carpenter or another main character in the Madame Web universe, Cassandra Webb. Cassandra was the original Madame Web in the comic books, though usually makes an appearance as an older version of the character. For that reason, most fans thought it made more sense that Johnson would take on the mantle of Carpenter.

The fact that Johnson looks to be playing Julia Carpenter could also confirm that this movie is feeding into what Sony is trying to do with its Spider-Man-centric movie universe. Previous pics from the set of Madame Web have hinted that the movie will be set in the early 2000s which makes quite a bit of sense if it's also setting up some of the other standalone films that will be loosely tied to Spider-Man even if they don't feature the web-head.

Those films include the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie. In the comics, Julia Carpenter received her Madame Web powers when Cassandra Webb was sacrificed in order to resurrect Kraven. Granted, it would seem as though some of that story is going to get changed, but the fact that Dakota Johnson is apparently going to be playing Carpenter does hint that there will be some sort of tie-in between the two films.

Madame Web hits theaters on October 6, 2023.
