With so many balls in the air for Marvel these days on the Sony and MCU side of things, delays and rescheduling are basically a fact of life. This now includes an impending newcomer to Sony's Marvel universe, Madame Web, whose upcoming film just took a bit of a breather.

Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, has been delayed from its original July 7th, 2023, release date to October 6th of the same year. It's not much of a setback compared to others in Marvel and Sony's history, but it's also not the only production facing such a change at the moment. Aside from Madame Web, another untitled Sony/Marvel film has seen a more substantial shift in release dates, moving from October 6th, 2023 all the way to June 7th, 2024.

Some speculate that the untitled film may be the next Spider-Man movie (which may or may not star Tom Holland again), though it's difficult to tell so early. Meanwhile, Madame Web's new slot has a history of success for Sony's Marvel offerings, including widely successful openings for 2018's Venom and its 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Both films released in October of their respective years, so perhaps Sony is adopting an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach.

Madame Web will tell the story of Spider-Man's titular clairvoyant ally, whose psychic abilities allow for some incredible feats of presence and foresight. According to Sony's teased synopsis for the Madame Web movie, "the film will be an origin story of the clairvoyant Madame Web, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world." In past stories, she has often bridged the gap between the various alternate universe versions of Spider-Man, which could suggest a multiverse-focused story. Some will recognize the character of Madame Web from the fan-favorite game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, where she gave guidance to the different versions of the web-slinger.

Aside from Johnson, who is set to play the title role, Madame Web will also star Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahir Rahim, Mike Epps, and Adam Scott. While none of them have had their respective roles revealed, it seems as though it will only be a matter of time. Plus, just knowing that Scott will be in a superhero movie is probably enough to get any Parks and Recreation fan at least a little excited.

There's still one heck of a wait before Madame Web and the untitled film make their grand entrances, but luckily, eager fans will have plenty to chew on in the meantime thanks to Marvel's never-ending stream of releases. Here's hoping the time flies like Captain Marvel herself.

Madame Web will release on October 6th, 2023, while the untitled Sony/Marvel film will release on June 7th, 2024.
