Marvel comic book fans have been treated to a lot of big screen content over the years. FOX released X-Men (and related characters) movies for years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been brought to life with the Avengers, and Sony has its Spider-Man movies. As the MCU grows, Sony has also begun developing more movies with Spider-Man related characters. The studio has seen a lot of success with Venom, has Morbius on the way, and has movies in development for the characters Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web, the latter of which will see Dakota Johnson taking on the role.

Madame Web isn’t a character who appears in hundreds of comic books, but she does have a pretty rich comic book history for the screenwriters to pull from. While she is largely connected to Spider-Man’s multiversal adventures, often responsible for bringing different Spider-characters together, she’s also got her own family, and has had run-ins with some interesting villains. While not much information about the movie has been released, there are quite a few characters who would make for interesting additions to the Madame Web movie.

Charlotte Witter

When Cassandra Webb is introduced in the comics, she’s already an elderly woman who has lived a long life. It’s not clear if that’s the version of Madame Web the audience will see on screen just yet, but if it is, her relative Charlotte Witter would be an interesting character - and potential villain - to appear in her movie.

Charlotte is Cassandra’s granddaughter, and one of the many women to use the moniker Spider-Woman. Charlotte’s biggest story in the comics is her attacking all of the Spider-Women who came before her and absorbing their powers to become even stronger. Since no other Spider-Women have been introduced yet, it’s unlikely that story would play out just yet. Instead, the audience could get a glimpse at her early life in the world of high-end fashion - and illegal importing and exporting. Charlotte has connections to several criminals thanks to her own illegal activities, and it’s those connections that end up getting her experimented on and ending up with her psychic abilities enhanced. A variation of her origin story could make her a great foil for Madame Web, however the scriptwriters choose to make them related.

Morris Maxwell

A split image depicts Morris Maxwell alone and as part of the Gathering of the Five in Marvel comics

Morris Maxwell isn’t a particularly well-known comic book character, but he did play a large role in one of Madame Web’s strangest stories. In it, Madame Web participated (along with teenage Spider-Woman Mattie Franklin) in a ritual called the Gathering Of The Five that gave each of the five members a “gift” that was the opposite of what they expected. Morris, an antiques dealer and shop owner in Manhattan, ended up with the gift of knowledge, but it overwhelmed him, causing him to keep himself secluded from the public.

It did mean that every so often, Madame Web and other Spider-heroes would go to him for help. He could give them answers as long as they asked the right question and didn’t cause the knowledge he was “gifted” to overwhelm his brain. Morris and Madame Web aren’t all that different in terms of their abilities, but they’re both affected by them in very different ways, which would make for an interesting way to approach Madame Web’s story.

The Kravinoff Family

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has already been cast in a Kraven the Hunter movie, with the cast slowly being filled out in recent months. If Sony is working to build their own connected universe of Spider-related characters, it makes perfect sense that Kraven himself, or one of the Kravinoff family members might make an appearance in Madame Web’s story.

After Sergei Kravinoff (Kraven the Hunter) dies, his wife and daughter take up his mission to hunt down Spider-Man. They try to give themselves an edge by kidnapping Madame Web and forcing her to give them information about Spider-Man to aid in their hunt. While the story wouldn’t have to play out exactly the same way, there’s no denying that the Kravinoff family and Madame Web are connected. After all, it’s their intent to kill Cassandra Web that sees her transfer her powers to someone new, giving the comics a whole new Madame Web to help Peter Parker.

Julia Carpenter

A split image features Julia Carpenter as Spider-Woman and as Madame Web in Marvel comics

In the comics, Julia Carpenter is a superhero long before she becomes Madame Web. She’s one of several women to use the codename Spider-Woman. Julia gains abilities after agreeing to participate in what she thinks is an academic study in college, but she’s actually experimented on and gains superpowers. Some fans have speculated that Dakota Johnson might actually be playing a version of Julia Carpenter instead of Cassandra Web, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Even if Johnson is playing the first version of Madame Web instead, seeing the world of Spider-heroes expand with characters like Julia would be a nice addition to the movie. After all, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is sprawling, but not many of the Spider-related characters have been fleshed out on Sony’s end. Julia doesn’t necessarily have to be called Spider-Woman either as she uses the codename Arachne at one point as well. She also maintains her superhero status while raising her daughter, which isn’t something seen often in superhero movies in the modern day. Outside of Ant-Man and Hawkeye, not many heroes are shown actually getting the chance to raise their children.

Peter Parker

Spider-Man No Way Home Tom Holland Tobey Maguire Andrew Garfield

Because Madame Web’s own comic book stories are so closely tied to Spider-Man’s, it seems impossible to think of her having a feature film without Spider-Man being involved in some way. Her visions of the future, after all, are most often tied to Spider-Man and related characters. Her entire introduction into comics is because Peter Parker doesn’t actually believe she has psychic abilities. While all of that may be different in Sony’s movie universe, a hint at her connection to the superhero might still be warranted if Sony wants to use Madame Web to build to a larger story as she’s used in the comics to unite different Spider-characters.

The question then, of course, is just which universe Madame Web will be a part of. Right now, movie audiences are most familiar with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU because he’s appeared in the most movies. His own trilogy, Captain America Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame have gone a long way into developing a character the audience knows inside and out. That doesn’t mean Madame Web needs to be introduced in his universe. Sony and Marvel have shown a willingness to bring back characters from previous franchises, leaving the door open for some of Sony’s upcoming Spider-characters to exist in the worlds of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man or Tobey Maguire’s. It might be more interesting if Madame Web’s story is set in one of their worlds, allowing the audience to see just where the character is now, even if only briefly.
