A recently surfaced picture on Twitter appears to indicate the existence of Mad Max 2, an unexpected sequel to the post-apocalyptic game of years past inspired by the popular film franchise. With so few details, however, many doubts linger regarding the real state of the project.A creation of Just Cause makers Avalanche Studios, Mad Max was released in 2015, closely following the success of the critically acclaimed movie Mad Max: Fury Road. While not strictly based on the film series, the video game is clearly inspired by it, and has profited from the collaboration of franchise's creator George Miller; the result is an open-world adventure full of action, set in a post-apocalyptic environment, with a particular focus on vehicular combat, and with the player in the guise of the eponymous Mad Max.RELATED: Kojima Wanted to Make a 'Mads Max' Game Featuring Mads MikkelsenConsidering that Avalanche Studios has never said anything about it, the Twitter post of Wendy Fok might very well be an unintentional leak. The digital designer showed a photo of herself getting a 3D photogrammetry scan at the Avalanche Studios in New York, stating that it happened before the pandemic and that they were including her in Mad Max 2 as a rebel. This single clue could mean that the successor to one of the most underrated games of its generation is in the works.

Doubt immediately erupted on social media. Some pointed out that Wendy Fok could have made a spelling error; but in the making of the original Mad Max game, there weren't facial scans involved. Others thought that the confusion might have been with Rage 2, another Avalanche Studios game; however, the latter doesn't feature rebels in it, and the designer clearly tagged the Mad Max game page in her tweet. All considered, the possibility that this sequel actually exists seems quite real, and comes at a time when fans of the franchise are already waiting for the successor of Mad Max: Fury Road, recently delayed to 2024.

While the existence of the game is plausible, its current state is completely unknown. Wendy Fok's pre-pandemic photo appears to be from 2017: so many years passed by without a single hint regarding the project mean either a hugely delayed work or, worse, an already canceled one. If that's the case, fans could always settle for replaying the original title, an open-world game that has stood the test of time much better than other, more famous titles of the same genre.

Mad Max is available on Linux, MacOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
