George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the most raved about films in recent history. Critics and audiences alike have praised it for its seamless storytelling, well-developed characters, and seemingly perfect action scenes that elevate the genre to a whole new standard. After the overwhelmingly positive reception that it received back in 2015, a follow-up project was inevitable. Now, almost six years later, we finally have a concrete update on the progress of that project, titled Furiosa.

During a press conference in Australia for Furiosa, the prequel to the 2015 film, new details were given about the production and its current status. Present on the panel were Mad Max director George Miller himself, as well as franchise newcomer Chris Hemsworth and Gladys Berejiklian, the Premier of New South Wales state in Australia. Together, they revealed that Furiosa will be the "largest film ever" made in Australia, teasing that the enterprise could be even bigger than its soon-to-be- predecessor.

In fact, it is such a massive undertaking that Berejiklian said Furiosa will bring as much as $350 million into New South Wales' economy, as well as generate over 800 jobs in the area. It only makes sense for the team at Warner Bros. to really push the budget for this prequel because it has big shoes to fill—after all, Mad Max: Fury Road went on to gross over $375 million worldwide, as well as win a total of six Academy Awards in the technical categories.

While the details of the plot are still unknown, we do know that the story will center on the much-beloved character Imperator Furiosa, who was played by Charlize Theron. In Fury Road, Furiosa became a hero in the post-apocalyptic world after she went rogue to liberate a group of enslaved "brides" from the villainous Immortan Joe.

Since the film will take place years before the events of Fury Road, the production has cast Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of The Queen's Gambit, to portray a younger version of Theron's Furiosa. Theron initially expressed disappointment that she was not recast; however, she did say that the decision was made under Miller's creative discretion and that she trusts his vision. Taylor-Joy also responded, saying that she respects the work Theron has done for the character and that she hopes to give the role the same justice.

We also know that the Furiosa will span over the course of many years, unlike Fury Road, which only took place over the course of three days and two nights. Hopefully, the long-awaited return of Furiosa will be able to live up to the years of waiting.

Furiosa is set to debut in theatres on June 22, 2023.
