For many tech enthusiasts, owning one of Apple's devices means buying into the entire ecosystem, and while whether or not that's a good idea depends entirely on the individual, there's always been some level of disparity between different device's features. However, it appears that Macs may soon be getting one of the iPhone's best features, Face ID.

Face ID allows users to log into their iPhones using a scan of their face. It was first introduced on the iPhone X, and has since become a staple of the device's capabilities, saving tons of time entering passwords. 9to5Mac was able to find references to "PearlCamera," the codename for Face ID, buried in macOS' Big Sur update.

Of course, this has led to speculation that Macs will be getting Face ID, though it would need to be on a Mac that supports True Depth camera, which would be a new model. That's disappointing, but it would be a major selling point for future iterations of macOS devices.

Currently, certain Macbooks feature the ability to log in with fingerprints, but not all of them. However, Face ID is an even better method, and tends to work very quickly. Oddly enough, Apple's code was also recently used to discover evidence of a 5.4" iPhone launching soon.
