M. Night Shyamalan, while working on his upcoming thriller, Knock At The Cabin, said that he found himself shook during filming. The man has a sixth sense for what’s happening in his own productions and signs are looking good for this upcoming film.
Having spent the last few years finishing up his Unbreakable trilogy and making a movie about the beach that turns you old, Knock at the Cabin continues in his deal with Universal, where he’s found his niche making lower-budget flicks. His reception has been up and down, but Shyamalan remains a director worth looking out for.
Shyamalan took to his Instagram to say that shooting a scene for his upcoming original thriller left him “having to walk away and collect” himself when one take got too real. He mentioned that the movie is “very dark” and very “emotional,” which is a strong indicator that the audience is going to have something to look forward to. Shyamalan remains one of those few directors who are worth watching even when they’re bad because their failures are still so interesting. While the plot is under wraps—with a report to BloodyDisgusting detailing it as being a home-invasion thriller set during the apocalypse—what is known is that it’s going to be a tight, taut film.
Each draft of the script coming in at a scant hundred pages indicates a return to the classic 90-minute movie here. The cast so far includes Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Rupert Grint (the Harry Potter franchise), Jonathan Groff (Netflix's Mindhunter), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Old), and Ben Aldridge (Pennyworth). They’re going to join the large, eclectic universe of actors Shyamalan has worked with over the years, which includes Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mark Wahlberg just to mention a few.
Having found his home at Universal (and encouraging Christopher Nolan to join him there), the lowered expectations of lowered budgets allow him to take bigger, weirder swings than he was used to doing when he was balancing massive budgets and their box office expectations on his shoulders. Films like Split, Glass, and The Visit (the forgotten found footage horror-comedy about a visit to a sinister grandma and grandpa) have cemented him as an auteur of dark thrillers, carving out his own sort of Twilight Zone.
If Shyamalan found himself disturbed during his first week of production, time will only tell what comes next. Hopefully he’ll keep taking to his Instagram to keep the audience updated on how his shoot for Knock at the Cabin goes and let a few more grisly tidbits slip along the way.
Knock at the Cabin is scheduled to hit theaters on February 3, 2023.
