At The Game Awards 2022, a new trailer for The Lords of the Fallen was shown, revealing the two monster-filled worlds the game takes place in. The title, which was originally believed to be Lords of the Fallen 2, was formally announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 with the updated name The Lords of the Fallen.

The original Lords of the Fallen was released in 2014 as one of the first prominent games in the Soulslike genre to not be developed by famed Elden Ring and Dark Souls developer FromSoftware. While the game's developer Deck13 went on to make The Surge series, publisher CI Games would begin looking for another studio to make a sequel to Lords of the Fallen in 2015, eventually assigning the project to its own subsidiary studio Hexworks. Little information on the game would surface until its formal announcement at Gamescom 2022.

Viewers of The Game Awards 2022 were given a new look at The Lords of the Fallen with the premiere of a new gameplay trailer. Captured in-game, this trailer gives hints about the game's setting of two different worlds, which were viewable to the protagonist through a lamp. Various enemies are given the spotlight, including spectral horrors, multi-limbed monsters, and boss-like wizards using both magic and melee weapons. It evokes the body horror aesthetics seen in FromSoftware's PS4 exclusive Bloodborne as well as the fantasy settings seen in Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series.

The trailer is narrated by House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock, whose narration hints towards the game story revolving around the protagonist's quest to overthrow the god Adyr, a character from the first game. Unlike the Gamescom trailer for The Lords of the Fallen, this one seems to have an original score that fittingly matched the game's horror tones. Different locations ranging from caves, castles, and rundown towns are featured, many of which are shown in two different forms depending on whether the player character is using their lamp.

The works of FromSoftware have clearly been an influence on both games in the Lords of the Fallen series. Though the Japanese development studio already had a lengthy catalog through the shooter mecha series Armored Core and the King's Field series of RPGs, it was not until the success of Dark Souls in 2011 that the studio would become known worldwide. Although other games such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the Nioh series followed in the Soulslike genre, they were all preceded by the original Lords of the Fallen. This was the game that helped open the door for studios to create their own take on what Dark Souls and Demon's Souls popularized. Now, over eight years after its release, CI Games and Hexworks are bringing the series back at an opportune time following the success of Elden Ring. It is only a matter of time until gamers see what The Lords of the Fallen has to offer.

The Lords of the Fallen is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
