As far as Souls-like games go, Lords of the Fallen has been one of the more better-received of the bunch. Lords of the Fallen 2 was announced very shortly after the original's release, but it has been trapped in development hell for years. While many fans had assumed Lords of the Fallen 2 was canceled, it turns out that the game is still in the works, and can be added to the growing list of games confirmed for next-generation consoles.

This news comes from CI Games itself, which has decided to develop Lords of the Fallen 2 internally after removing Defiant Studios from the project. "We have already developed a modernized version of the game, based on what has already been done with the game before," CI Games president Marek Tyminski said in an interview with Strefainwestorow. It was also confirmed that the studio is recruiting talent to work on the game.

It should be noted that Lords of the Fallen 2 is said to "mainly" be aiming for PC and next-gen console, so it's possible that it will still come to PS4 and Xbox One. Cross-gen games were common in the early days of the PS4 and Xbox One, and all signs point to a similar situation when it comes to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, so it remains to be seen if fans will need to purchase a new console to get their hands on the game.

Unfortunately, it still remains to be seen exactly when Lords of the Fallen 2 will release. The game was announced all the way back in 2014, but it has suffered on development setback after the next. To put things in perspective, the original Lords of the Fallen 2 release date was in 2017, and so the game is a whopping three years off schedule. With it aiming for next-gen consoles, it seems like a safe bet that fans won't see it until those come out at least, so don't expect it to launch until some time in 2021 at the earliest.

One has to wonder how Lords of the Fallen 2 development would have gone differently had the developer behind the original game, Deck13 Interactive, stuck around. Deck13 has since gone on to create more well-received Souls-like games with The Surge and its sequel The Surge 2, both of which have come out in the years that Lords of the Fallen 2 development has seemingly stalled.

Hopefully more information on Lords of the Fallen 2 comes soon, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X games in general.
