A video game can take years to develop, so it makes sense if publishers decide to stretch the gameplay as long as possible. We've progressed so far from the classic simplicity of titles like 1992's Alone in the Dark to perplexing, multi-layered games like Bloodborne and The Evil Within

Whether it's due to the harsh, massive open-world map in Days Gone or the abundance of storylines in Resident Evil 6, these ten horror games require players to dedicate an enormous amount of their time to compete.

10 Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (35 Hours)

Resident Evil Revelations zombie

The Resident Evil franchise has been terrorizing players for over two decades. The 2015 episodic Revelation 2 takes roughly 35 hours to complete its four main chapters and two bonus episodes.

In Revelations 2, players take control of Claire Redfield, accompanied by Barry Burton, as the two try to connect the missing dots of the TerraSave attack. Upon its release, the game received polarizing reviews from the fans, notably due to its further departure from the franchise's classic horror roots.

9 Metro Exodus (36 Hours)

35 hours of gameplay is a bit too much to 100% a single, linear storyline. Metro Exodus centers on Artyom, a member of Spartan Rangers elite militia group fleeing Moscow's city in search of a new place to call home.

Gameplay-wise, Metro Exodus is a little bit of a let-down. Gunplay and knife-throwing mechanics are the game's most frustrating aspects, and the 'open-world' doesn't offer much in the way of exploration for players.

8 The Evil Within (37 Hours)

The Evil Within (2014) is a nightmarish survival horror game you do not want to miss. The game sits between 37 to 40 hours for a perfect completion, although it only takes 20-23 hours to finish the main story. The title's difficulty curve will have players overcoming a couple of trial-and-error challenges before progressing.

On top of that, The Evil Within has three playable expansion packs: 'The Assignment,' 'The Consequence,' and 'The Executioner,' which add a little bit more depth to the story.

7 The Last Of Us Part II (38 Hours)

The Last of Us: Part II tells two sides of the same story: one for Ellie Williams and the other for Abby Anderson. Hence the game takes a considerable 38 hours for full completion.

After hours of playing as Ellie, the story flashes back & reframes the perspective so audiences have to play as her antagonist, Abby. Each character has their own complete arc, resulting in a a story much longer than The Last of Us Part I.

6 Prey (43 Hours)

Although Prey is more of a psychological shooter, its horror elements lend to a potential 43 hour long playthrough. Multiple side quests, vast open-world exploration, and customization make the FPS a lengthy affair. On top of that, Prey features two optional endings that encourage replay value.

5 Dying Light (53 Hours)

Set in Harran city in Turkey, 2015's Dying Light takes at least 53 hours to complete if you love grinding for the trophies. If not, however, 17 hours should be enough. Dying Light takes the players through the journey of Kyle Crane, an undercover agent, as he discovers the dark truth behind the infested city. The game features a fluid parkour system that lets the players move from one place to the next effortlessly.

4 Pathologic 2 (56 Hours)

Pathologic 2 takes 56 hours to beat to 100% completion and around 38 for any casual gamers just looking to get through the story.

Players are free to choose from three playable characters: Artemy 'Haruspex' Burakh (a surgeon), Daniil 'Bachelor' Dankovsky (a medical expert), and Clara (a mysterious, mind-reading girl). Each character has their own story.

3 Resident Evil 6 (57 Hours)

For the first time in Resident Evil history, RE6 featured seven playable characters across three different chapters with one unlockable story: Leon & Helena, Chris & Piers, Jake & Sherry, and Ada Wong.

What makes the game so long to beat is that each chapter is more or less its own full-length game, although most of the story centers around the same setting and features recurring plot points.

2 Days Gone (62 Hours)

Days Gone is a frustrating game to beat. Imagine a zombie-infested world where you have to either face hordes of Infected or clear up their nest, but before you know it your motorbike is out of fuel. That's what makes the game takes such a long time to beat— 62 hours for a 100% completion and 38 hours for its main story alone.

Before its release, Days Gone was hyped as the game that would bring a new breath to the genre, although it failed to live up to the billing. Weak shooting mechanics, frustratingly slow bikes, and poor cutscene transitions are among the harshest criticisms.

1 Bloodborne (76 Hours)

Challenging? Yes. Impossible to finish? Not really. Hailed as one of the greatest games of all-time, Bloodborne takes a whopping 34 hours for its complex main story alone. If you're a completionist, get ready to dedicate 76 hours of your time to get all the possible trophies.

Although it was marketed as the kind of game for high-level skill players, finishing Bloodborne is still doable even for casual gamers. It's possible to call for some help using the multiplayer feature to ease up your odyssey as The Hunter.
