The following includes spoilers for episode 3 of Loki.

Marvel's Loki on Disney Plus has introduced the Time Variance Authority, also known as the TVA. The TVA is an agency existing outside time itself that is run by the mysterious Time-Keepers. The mission of the TVA is to maintain the "sacred timeline" as determined by the Time Keepers, dealing with people who step off of their pre-ordained path, who the TVA calls variants.

While the TVA presents itself as a force of good, saving the universe from a multi-versal war and certain destruction, both Loki and the audience have doubts about their true intentions. Loki does not like the idea of his destiny being pre-ordained and wants an audience with the Time Keepers, wondering who they could be to think they can determine the "correct" timeline.

Despite never meeting the Time-Keepers himself, TVA agent Mobius firmly believes that they and the agency as a whole are in the right. He believes that when they finish unraveling the sacred timeline there will be peace and order, while Loki is skeptical. However, episode three of Loki brings with it a big revelation about the TVA that could forever change the way Mobius thinks about the TVA, and justify Loki's criticisms.

Episode three of Loki, "Lementis," opens with the female variant Loki, who is later revealed to go by Sylvie, sitting in what looks like a modern margarita bar with the TVA agent she extracted information from in episode two, C-20. It becomes clear that Sylvie is in C-20's mind, creating a false memory or fantasy to try and learn how to find the Time-Keepers. C-20 wavers in and out of understanding that something is not right, at one point recognizing the bar, but realizing she does not know who Sylvie is.

Later in the episode, Sylvie explains to Loki how she enchants people, as she did with C-20. She explains that she has to make physical contact in order to grab hold of their mind. When she does so, she can create a fantasy for them from their memories. Sylvie says that in the case of C-20, she had to go back hundreds of years, to before C-20 was working for the TVA. Loki is shocked, but Sylvie says that before the TVA, C-20 was just a regular person, one who loved margaritas.

Loki says that he was told everyone who works for the TVA was created by the Time Keepers, referring to a conversation he had with Mobius in episode two. Sylvie, incredulous, says, "That's ridiculous. They're all variants, just like us." Loki simply responds, "They don't know that!" Despite this being a massive revelation about the TVA, the conversation is unable to go any further, as Loki and Sylvie have to focus on getting off the planet that they are stuck on during an apocalypse.

This revelation means that every TVA agent is actually a variant, regular people who deviated from their pre-ordained path on the sacred timeline. Somehow, their memories were altered, and they were all are given jobs with the TVA, with no memories of their lives before. These agents have been working for the TVA, some for hundreds of years if not more, without their true consent and with no knowledge of how they got there. They are being lied to and have forgotten who they truly are.

In hindsight, there have been hints that this is the case within the first two episodes of Loki. In the first episode, Mobius does not answer how long he has been working for the agency, saying that "time passes differently in the TVA." Mobius is seen drinking a Josta, which is a cola that only existed in the 1990s, and in episode two, is shown to be obsessed with Jet-skis. He thinks their height of popularity in the 1990s was a "shining moment" in history. This could indicate that Mobius is a variant from the 1990s and has some residual memories that led to his love for items from the decade.

It is clear the Time Keepers, or whoever may be in charge, do not want the agents aware of their past. In episode two, Mobius says that he sadly isn't allowed to take a trip to the 1990s to ride a Jet-ski, allegedly due to risk of messing up the timeline. Later in the episode, when C-20 is found after Sylvie has been in her head, she is repeating, "it's all real" and "I want to go home." For a brief moment, she realizes she is working for the TVA against her will, although it does not last.

For the moment, only Sylvie and Loki are aware of the true origins of the TVA agents. Further episodes of Loki could reveal who else already knew. The most likely suspect is Revonna Renslayer, the judge at the TVA who approves all missions. She is the only one who directly communicates with the Time-Keepers, so she seems to be the most in-the-know at the TVA. It is definitely possible that she is aware of the TVA agents all being variants.

Ravonna Renslayer is at the TVA

It seems almost certain that other characters in Loki will have this information revealed to them by the time the season ends. However, it seems unlikely that Mobius, for example, would believe Loki telling him this information without proof. Is it only Sylvie that can reveal this to them through their own memories, and how long will that knowledge last? There is also a library with files on every variant in the TVA, but how could Loki or the agents get access to ones that reveal major information about the TVA, and do they even exist in the library?

If agents discover they have been working there under false pretenses, this could lead them to question everything they have been told about the TVA. The true intent and assumed omniscience of the Time-Keepers comes into doubt. This revelation could also call into doubt the existence of the Time Keepers themselves, since they did not create the TVA agents specifically for this purpose. Loki alone possessing this knowledge is big enough in itself, but it is the agents knowing that could possibly even lead to the downfall of the TVA. With three episodes of the season to go, there is clearly a lot of action to come.
