The following article contains spoilers for the season finale of Loki.

Disney Plus’ Loki has achieved its glorious purpose and introduced Marvel fans to the Multiverse of Madness. From alternate branched realities to the big villain reveal, the season finale had a lot to offer and has entirely changed the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the episode also had many fans wondering if despite everything, whether the God of Mischief is in fact destined to be alone.

In its six-episode run, season 1 of Loki has had many ups and downs for the titular character. His journey begins when he is arrested by the Time Variance Authority and along the way he meets several new characters who made their MCU debut in the Disney Plus series. As the season progressed, fans expected Loki to finally find true love and a lasting friendship, but the series finale rips it all away.

In the first episode, fans met Owen Wilson’s Agent Mobius M. Mobius and it was obvious right off the bat that he would be one of the few characters to stay in Loki’s corner till the end. When Loki arrives in front of Judge Ravonna Renslayer, he is sentenced to be reset. But, Mobius steps in and saves Loki from his fate, which he is unable to avoid later in the season. Looking for an excuse to speak to him privately, Mobius then directs Loki to the Time Theater.

This is where the Loki-Mobius friendship begins. While things are rough in the beginning, over time, the two become almost inseparable and even go as far as trust each other. As part of his interrogation, Mobius makes Loki watch a series of video clips from his timeline. Watching his mother's, and his own, death makes Loki visibly emotional and sets off his relatively humble (or less obnoxious) attitude.

From there on, Loki and Mobius work together to find a Loki Variant, who ends up being Sylvie, and while on the job, they seem to form the perfect buddy cop relationship. Eventually, the God of Mischief is able to convince Mobius that everybody working at the TVA is essentially a Variant. This reveal is what brings the two even closer, and there’s no turning back from thereon. When Mobius gets pruned by Renslayer, it is evidently heartbreaking for Loki as he tears up after watching his friend being killed. Fans probably felt the same at that point, but just when they had given up on this sacred friendship, the two reunite in The Void.

The scene where Loki hugs Mobius and thanks him for trusting him is perhaps the most important for their friendship, and the God of Mischief’s personal character developmentIn the past, fans have seen Loki lie, cheat death, and backstab those closest to him. But, never have they seen him express his true feelings for another individual, let alone trust anyone other than himself. But, in Mobius, Loki seems to have found a true friend, which is rare for the Asgardian prince. Their friendship is reminiscent of the love-hate relationship between Loki and his brother Thor

After spending a decade in the MCU as a solo warrior, fans were thrilled to see Loki finally partner with another individual. But, the season finale had different plans for the God of Mischief. When Sylvie and Loki come face-to-face with the man behind the curtain, who turns out to be a Kang the Conqueror Variant referred to as He Who Remains, the Multiverse is confirmed. But little do Loki and the fans know at that point that the introduction of the branched realities would result in Loki and Mobius’ friendship ending.

As Loki returns to the TVA, he meets Mobius who doesn’t even seem to recognize him. Loki explains to Mobius and Hunter-B15 that he managed to find He Who Remains at the Citadel, but his friend asks him to calm down and inquires whether he’s a new analyst. In that moment, as fans are wondering what is wrong with Mobius, Loki realizes that the timeline is completely broken and he has arrived in an alternate reality where the TVA is run by Kang.

Speaking of Kang, the alternate version of him that fans see at the Citadel is killed by Sylvie after she pushes Loki through a time portal. This also ends Loki’s chance at finding true love. Throughout the season, a romance between Loki and Sylvie was teased. It begins when the two Loki Variants are stranded on Lamentis-1 and struggle to find a way off the planet before it is destroyed. At first, they seem to quarrel like siblings, but soon Loki seems to be drawn towards what is essentially another version of himself.

Loki and Sylvie sweet moment cute

While many fans found this a bit odd, it seemed perfect to have the two find solace in each other, especially in what could have potentially been their last moments alive. They first share an emotional moment on Lamentis-1 as the planet is hit by meteorites, and moving forward, they seem to constantly worry about the other’s safety. When Loki is pruned by Renslayer, Sylvie prunes herself in order to be reunited with Loki and truly find out who is behind the TVA.

As they both approach Alioth, their bond deepens further. “You go, I go,” Loki says to Sylvie when she informs him of her decision to enchant the smoke monster and the two manage to complete the task together. However, all of this comes crumbling down when the two meet He Who Remains and disagree on whether he is telling the truth about the sacred timeline or not - Sylvie doesn’t believe his story and wants to kill him, whereas Loki is more concerned about the consequences.

It’s obvious to the viewer that Loki has forged a new path for himself and has learned to trust people, and perhaps even fall in love. But, Sylvie is still unable to trust and break away from her past. This leads to a fight between the two Lokis, followed by an emotional kiss, and ends with Sylvie pushing Loki away, literally. She then goes on to get her revenge and triggers the Multiverse of Madness.

Ever since fans have met Loki in 2011’s Thor, it was evident that the Asgardian’s biggest fear was ending up alone and failing at his mission. He has never had any lasting relationships, and even his equation with his brother was extremely complicated. The Loki season finale offers the same fate to the God of Mischief, with him being left all alone at the end of the season and his mission to end the TVA and allow everyone to have free will isn’t going too well either.

The only hope that fans have is that there will be a second season of the popular series. It would be interesting to see if Loki will go on a solo adventure moving forward or if he will in fact be reunited with his companions Mobius and Sylvie. Only time will tell. For now, as He Who Remains stated before taking his last breath, Loki will “see you soon.”

Loki is now streaming on Disney Plus.
