The ending of Locke and Key Season 3 has a strong tone of closure as the confirmed final season, but there are still some loose ends that might leave some fans of the show scratching their heads in wonder. Locke and Key is a magnificent and popular series, giving viewers a range of twists and turns along the Locke's magical journey in each series.

However, although the show nicely wraps up the stories of many of the main and supporting characters to a satisfying conclusion, there are some questions that are arguably not answered or fully explained in the slightly shorter Season 3.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

10 Who Were The Wheeler Sisters And How Did They Get Trapped Inside The Snow Globe?

Nina With The Snow Globe Key In Netflix's Locke And Key

In Episode 1 of Season 3, viewers meet the sisters Dorothy and Ada Wheeler, who turn out to be demons trapped inside the Snow Globe and who Nina and Bode accidentally set free. However, the series never explains how they became trapped or for how long. Viewers only find out they are from the same realm as the demon possessing Gideon as they call him Master, can sense his presence, and are aware of the keys, including the Creation Key revealed towards the end of the series.

At Duncan and Brian's wedding, an Easter Egg Wheeler Sisters gin bottle is placed on a table, suggesting they are known locally in Matheson, perhaps historically in the time of Benjamin Locke, as their long cloaks imply they are from a bygone age.

9 What Realm Did The Demons Come From And Where Is It?

Inside The Black Door In Netflix's Locke And Key

Throughout the whole series of Locke and Key, little is revealed about the realm beyond the black door gateway in the sea caves. When Ellie returns after being trapped there, she fearfully describes it as feeling like an empty void in time and space. The blue abyss itself certainly looks space-like but tells viewers little about the demon realm where the demonic Dodge and Gideon come from and where that world is specifically.

Apart from stepping inside Eden's head, the characters never get to use the Head Key on Dodge or Gideon, which could have been an insightful opportunity to show viewers more about the mysterious demon realm.

8 What Happened To The Portal In The Sea Caves?

Eden Looking Inside The Black Door Entrance In Netflix's Locke And Key

When Gideon uses the keys to open up another portal inside Keyhouse and the Lockes close it by throwing all the remaining keys back in, viewers might wonder what happened to the original Black Door in the sea caves.

In Season 2, Episode 9, the entrance to the cave collapses after Eden lures Josh there. Shortly after viewers see Ellie escape the portal and close the door before the cave fully collapses, and the blue light of the portal goes out. This suggests that the sea cave collapse may have destroyed it for good, but with caves as a popular setting for secrets, it is not necessarily possible to know for sure as no one ventures back.

7 Why Is The Small World Key Never Considered?

Bode And Jamie Discover The Small World Key And Dollhouse-sized Keyhouse In Netflix's Locke And Key

In Episode 8 of Season 2, Jamie gives the Small World Key back to Bode at school, so by the time Season 3 starts, viewers can assume Bode possesses it again. However, it's unclear why the Lockes never think to use the Small World Key as a potential weapon, as they did against Eden in Season 2, or why Gideon or Dodge never consider the Small World Key in their search for the keys.

In the series, viewers only see Bode, Jamie, Nina, and Josh around the dollhouse version of Keyhouse, and despite the giant spider invasion event of Season 2, it seems to remain a hidden possession at Josh's place.

6 What Happened To The Music Box, Harlequin Chest, Small Keyhouse, Mending Cupboard, Hercules Belt, And Angel Harness?

Kinsey Wearing The Angel Harness In Netflix's Locke And Key

In the season finale, the Lockes throw the keys back into the portal to close it for good, except for the ones that Gideon possessed. However, viewers never get to find out what happens to the objects paired with the keys, like the Hercules belt and the Harlequin chest.

Presumably, as they only work with the keys, there was perhaps no need to dispose of them. However, their fate is unknown, and it is unclear who created the Angel harness and Hercules belt. Presumably, they are just normal objects, like the Harlequin chest that Benjamin Locke demonstrates in Episode 2 of Season 3.

5 Is Bolton Still A Ghost?

James Bolton, Samuel Coffey, And Captain Frederick Gideon In Netflix's Locke And Key

In Episode 6 of Season 3, James Bolton's fate is left somewhat unclear, unlike the other echo Samuel Coffey who Dodge destroys with the well barrier. Gideon orders Bolton to use the ghost key and travel through the ghost doorway, but viewers later learn that Sam returns in Bolton's body instead of Bolton himself, suggesting that Bolton is trapped in the Keyhouse grounds as an echo in ghost form.

The character Bolton never returns, so viewers can only presume that he remains at Keyhouse, keeping Chamberlain Locke company.

4 What Happened To Dodge's Body?

Dodge In Netflix's Locke And Key

In Episode 4 of Season 3, viewers see that Dodge has hidden his own body underneath Bode's bed, which Nina soon discovers and claims they will deal with the body later. However, later never seems to arrive, and it's unknown what happens to Dodge's body.

Before Dodge vanished back to the past by the failsafe anti-paradox hourglass in the clock, Duncan tells Kinsey that it will be as if the events of the Time Shift Key never occurred. This might suggest that the body disappeared with Dodge. If this didn't happen, one possibility is that the Lockes could have thrown the body over the cliffside, like Eden, but viewers never get to find out for sure.

3 Who Was The Demon Inside Captain Gideon And What Made Gideon So Special?

Captain Gideon With The Head Key In Netflix's Locke And Key

Some viewers criticized the main villain of Season 3, Captain Gideon because little is known about the demon that possesses him. Dodge refers to him as like a God in the demon world and a much more powerful foe. We see a glimmer of Gideon's demonic original form when his face changes into a demon-like snarl, but otherwise, there is not much information about the character other than his intention for destruction.

It's also unclear why Gideon in human form was able to reveal the original sea cave portal, but it suggests he may have somehow been chosen, perhaps due to his fierce and powerful character.

2 Was Anyone Held Accountable For Gordie Shaw's Death?

The Inside Of Gordie Shaw's Mind In Locke And Key

In Episode 7 of Season 3, viewers witness the unfortunate demise of Gordie Shaw despite the paramedics' attempts to save his life. Police officers then arrive at Gordie's property, but Gideon kills them.

However, although it is likely the paramedics saw Rufus, Gordie's murder never seems to be followed up any further with no one held responsible, even though Rufus would likely have been the main, albeit incorrect, suspect. Like in other cases, presumably they had no leads or simply forgot what they saw owing to the presence of magic.

1 Are There Still More Keys In Keyhouse?

Keyhouse In Netflix's Locke And Key

Season 3 ends with the Locke's closing the door on monster hunting for good and as Nina literally closes the front door, whispering iron is heard, suggesting there could still be more keys in the house that the Lockes haven't found.

As it's already effectively been confirmed that Season 3 is the final series, this gives the ending a bit of mystery rather than anything with potential substance. It's most likely a nod to the comics that features more keys than shown in Netflix's series and is nonetheless a fun way to end the final moments of closure in the series.
