The Netflix original series Locke and Key finally received some news about when the second season is coming. It turns out the show is going to be returning to Netflix later this fall.

Getting a live-action adaptation of Locke and Key has been quite the bumpy road over the years. There was a time when it was slated for network television and then that was scrapped for an apparent Hulu launch. That version of the story never ended up happening either but eventually, Netflix picked up the rights and launched season 1 in February of 2020. Thanks to a pandemic slowing the production of everything down to a crawl, the second season is coming quite a bit later, but it is coming.

Earlier this week, Netflix followed up on its much earlier announcement that season 2 of Locke and Key is coming by confirming an October release window. The streaming service made the announcement through its official Twitter account. It made the announcement as part of its Geeked Week presentations that are running alongside Summer Games Fest and the beginning of E3 2021.

While some fans had expressed concern that the show had been canceled after getting very little information about the show, a second season was apparently never in doubt. Last winter, Netflix renewed Locke and Key for season 2 just a month after season 1 debuted on the streaming service. In December of last year, it was announced that Locke and Key season 3 was officially greenlit.

Locke and Key was written by Joe Hill, who penned both the Netflix series and the graphic novel it's based on. He's a seasoned horror writer who also happens to be the son of another famed novelist, Stephen King. The original graphic novels told the story of the Locke family, who move to the "Key House" after a family tragedy. Soon Tyler, Bode, and Kinsey find that the keys hidden around their new home have seemingly magical powers. However, they aren't the only ones who know about the keys, and an evil presence is bound and determined to get all the keys and gather their power.

Netflix's announcement about Locke and Key season 2 comes in a week where the streaming service has been shuffling its programming. While it continued its commitment to the Joe Hill story, it also quietly canceled and then reshaped another series based on a graphic novel. The entire cast of Jupiter's Legacy was informed they'd been released from their contracts. Netflix said it's planning on making that show more of an anthology entry than a single linear story.

Locke and Key Season 2 will air on Netflix in October of 2021.
