The niche Square RPG Live A Live's fanbase continues to have hope that a new release or sequel will eventually be made. That's despite Live A Live being released in 1994 and never even being localized for audiences outside of Japan. Yet that fanbase's passion has been heard loud and clear by the game's creator, Takashi Tokita. In a recent 26th anniversary livestream hosted by Square Enix, Tokita went so far as to say that a new release could be possible one day with enough fan support.
During the Q&A portion of the broadcast, a fan asked whether Live A Live will ever be localized in English or officially released in the west. Tokita responds first by acknowledging that Live A Live has only been ported to the Wii U, but has otherwise never been localized, ported, remastered, or rereleased since its original launch. Tokita's response seemed to make clear how unlikely any future Live A Live releases would be.
That leads to Tokita acknowledging that the reason that Square Enix hosted the anniversary event in the first place is due to the continued support from fans. It's that idea, that recognition from the fans led to the event, that leads Tokita to make the claim about a new release. He says that with continued fan support, something could happen in the future. That something could be a rerelease, a remaster, or a sequel, but Tokita doesn't speculate any further.
It's genuinely surprising that Live A Live got an anniversary livestream. The game sold just 270,000 copies on the SNES, after all. But Tokita would go on to direct games including Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve. He'd be involved with many, many more games. He has a huge following and he considers Live A Live to be hugely influential in his work. It's unsurprising that a cult following grew around Live A Live as a result. But who knows how far that cult following can go from here.
