In the world of LittleBigPlanet and its recently released successor, LittleBigPlanet 2, there are two distinct venues in which players can experience a rich variety of gameplay styles: the Media Molecule created story levels and the levels created by the devoted and inventive community. In an effort to bridge those two areas of the game, Media Molecule issued a challenge to any community members brave enough to create a story campaign using the tools packaged with LBP 2.

Now, almost a month after the release of the game, a team of twelve creative minds has delivered a seven level story campaign titled Hansel and Gretelbot that features the lovable Sackboy and the new Sackbot. Loosely based on the Grimm fairy tale, this LittleBigPlanet variation tasks the player with surviving the many dangers of the Dark Western Woods in order to get Sackboy and his sister home.

With nothing but the same tools that any player of LittleBigPlanet 2 has access to, this team of twelve was the first to answer a call that will hopefully prove that this sequel is truly a “platform for games.” The result, as indicated by the trailer below, is a combination of LBP’s whimsical platforming and some of the newer features, like the Controlinator and the grappling hook.

Creating just one unique level, let alone seven, is something to be applauded. Setting the bar very high for any community levels to come, Hansel and Gretelbot has the potential of netting some very clever folk a job in the industry.

Currently there is no word as to how this new story campaign will be introduced to the game — whether by title update or DLC — but players can expect to get their hands on it, and the new story levels from Media Molecule, very soon.

What do you think of Hansel and Gretelbot? Would you be interested in checking out the levels if they were not available for free?

LittleBigPlanet 2 is out now for the PS3.
