Fans have been waiting for Little Witch in the Woods for a while now, and the release of the pixel art fantasy RPG is getting closer than ever. While no new trailer was shown at today's ID@Xbox indie games showcase on Twitch, Little Witch in the Woods was confirmed to launch day one on Xbox Game Pass.

Little Witch in the Woods was first announced towards the end of 2019 by South Korean gaming studio Sunny Side Up. As the title suggests, being able to play as a cute witch in the woods is a big draw. New gameplay was shown off at 2020's Wholesome Direct, an indie games showcase, which will also make a return this year. Originally, the developers hoped to releases the game on PC, and possibly on consoles.

Little Witch in the Woods puts players in the role of Ellie, a young witch that arrives in a new town where she has to study magical creatures, brew potions, and learn more about witchcraft. As a tradition in Ellie's witch school, students are expected to complete an apprenticeship at an assigned village, helping villagers and making it a better place during their stay.

Since this is similar to how young witches in Kiki's Delivery Service have to go off on their own to a new town, there is probably a little Studio Ghibli inspiration in this game. Sunny Side Up is hoping to release the game sometime in 2021, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers will have first dibs.

The lasting impact of Stardew Valley is still apparent, as another similar-looking game called Coral Island received over 1.6 million through Kickstarter, showing that interest in this genre of games isn't going away any time soon. Hopefully, fans get confirmation of a release date sometime soon. Little Witch in the Woods may even make an appearance at this year's Wholesome Direct. Until then, fans will just have to wait and see.

Little Witch in the Woods is in development for PC, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
