'Limbo' Tops Xbox Live 2010 Summer of Arcade Offerings

Xbox Live’s Summer of Arcade was gamers chance to pick up some really fantastic downloadable titles for a cheaper price than a retail game. From this past summer’s Arcade titles many standouts emerged including Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

But one game stood out above all of them as the most beautiful and the most unique: Limbo. Now comes confirmation that not only was Limbo a marvelous artistic creation but it was actually the most popular Summer of Arcade title in 2010.

Recently, Microsoft Game Studios VP, Phil Spencer, spoke about the existence of retro titles atop the downloadable sales charts, confirming:

"Our number one Summer of Arcade game is Limbo, by a long stretch."

It's reassuring to see that non-mainstream titles, can still find a large audience - through downloadable marketplaces. Spencer cites a new way of thinking about gamer's approach to the downloadable game market, stating:

"It's changing though. I really think coming out of Braid, Shadow Complex, Limbo [...] that it's changing a little bit. We see that in the market, that it's becoming less about iconic IP that people know and it's becoming more diverse."

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Limbo, we highly recommend you do. The trial and error conceit of the game makes for some truly amazing moments, especially when you finally discover what the developers had intended all along. Throughout the game players will find themselves looking at an obstacle, confused as to how to carry on, but knowing that the answer is hidden right there in front of their eyes - which creates a strong desire to carry on.

For those who are fans of this Summer of Arcade style of releasing weekly downloadable games, don’t worry, there's more on the way. Starting in just a few weeks, The Game Feast will hit your Xbox 360 consoles to deliver some extremely unique titles including one with a Super Meat Boy.

Which do you prefer using the Game Marketplace for Ranters? Titles that might not have received a full retail release or HD updates of retro classics? Let us know in the comments below.

Limbo is available now on the Xbox Live Arcade for 1200 Microsoft Points.
