A new video from Sega reveals a character that ended up being cut from the recently released Like a Dragon: Ishin remake. This remake is of the 2014 Bakumatsu-era spin-off, where instead of the focus on the bustling streets of Kamurocho filled with Yakuza toughs, it’s the rustic Edo period with ronins and samurais. While this Like a Dragon game is focused on a different era, it features a number of familiar faces portraying a number of historical figures. Kazuma Kiryu for example, portrays the legendary samurai, Ryoma Sakamoto. One character from the modern Like a Dragon timeline was planned to be included in the Ishin remake but ended up being cut.

This tidbit was revealed in a new documentary series from Sega, known as “Behind the Scenes of Like a Dragon,” posted on its official YouTube channel. The series currently has produced two episodes so far, which gives fans a peek behind the curtain on the development of certain games. The second episode is mostly focused on Like a Dragon: Ishin, though the title notes there are spoilers for the game in the video. The character that was planned to be included, but ended up being cut, was based on a classic character from the series, Mack.

Mack Shinozuka’s first appearance was in Yakuza 3, where he introduces a mechanic known as Revelations to Kiryu and the other playable characters. Mack himself is a photography nut, and his goal was to capture “the perfect shot,” resulting in him showing Kiryu how to capture special moments to learn new moves. While he would appear in both Yakuza 4 and 5, he hasn't appeared again since. With his strong focus on photography, it was proposed that he introduce Ishin’s photo mode, but it ended up being cut.

The video shows off how Mack would have looked in the game, where he had a new design, complete with a dapper suit and tie, along with a mustache. The pitch meeting had its staff, including Like a Dragon series director, Masayoshi Yokoyama, discussing the photography mode. Yokoyama reasoned that it would seem a little ridiculous that Mack could be wandering around the Meiji period, along with having him in the remake just for a cameo is "shallow reasoning." He also stated that if the game had a film development minigame, it was possibly okay to include him.

Yokoyama also states that arbitrarily adding characters into the story is a pet peeve of his, where he raised concerns over the redesigned Miss Tatsu from Yakuza 0, who did end up being included in Ishin as Yae Yamamoto. Other parts of the video showcased Takaya Kuroda, the voice of Kazuma Kiryu, recording the voiceover for a cutscene between Kiryu and Ichiban Kasuga for Like a Dragon 8. The video even teases Kiryu's new look in the game, where he apparently looks older and has more wrinkles around his neck.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
