Life is Strange developers Dontnod Entertainment reveal a number of screenshots showing off the company's next role-playing game, a horror game called Vampyr.

After the surprise success of Life is Strange, all eyes are on Dontnod Entertainment and its next project, Vampyr. Today the company revealed more information about the game, along with a slew of screenshots that show off its incredibly dark setting.

Set in 20th century Britain, Vampyr casts players as a military surgeon named Jonathan E. Reid as he deals with the Spanish flu and vampires ravaging the country. Early on in the game, Reid winds up becoming a vampire himself, and so players have to start feeding on the populace in order to survive.

Unlike many other games, however, characters in Vampyr will not respawn. This means that if Reid chooses to kill and feed on a certain character, their death will have a ripple effect that influences other characters in the game as well. In this way, Vampyr shares some similarities with the shifting plot present in Dontnod's award-winning Life is Strange.

"Absolutely all characters in the game are potential victims of your vampiric lust. Carefully study the habits of your next victim, his or her relationships with other characters, and set up your strategy to feed, unnoticed: seduce them, change their daily habits, or make sure they end up alone in a dark street."

Feeding on the populace will not only keep Reid alive, but it will in turn unlock supernatural abilities for him to utilize. Besides supernatural forces, combat in the game will also lean on typical melee and shooting mechanics. According to Dontnod, weapon crafting will also be a core component of the experience.

While the screenshots look a little too dark, Vampyr nevertheless has a very intriguing premise that makes us interested to see more of the game. Dontnod's Remember Me was nominated for some awards, and the company is now considered a major player in the gaming industry thanks to that and the excitement surrounding Life is Strange, making it even harder to wait to see Vampyr in action.

It will be interesting to see if Dontnod is able to nail the game's unique vampire-feeding gameplay mechanics. The company has shown in the past that it has no problem when it comes to developing a compelling video game story, but it has struggled to make certain unique gameplay features, such as Remember Me's ability to alter characters' memories, click on a fundamental level.

Hopefully Dontnod shows us more of Vampyr sooner rather than later. The screenshots it has released so far look almost too dark to even see what is going on, but the game's premise sounds like it has a ton of potential. Let's hope that Dontnod is able to catch lightning in a bottle twice when Vampyr releases next year.

Vampyr will be available in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
