The choice to blame Chloe, or take the blame, during Episode 1 of Life is Strange can alter the events of the story in a big way. This guide will explain a general overview of what happens, and then a spoiler breakdown for those who want to know the exact details of the plot.

Consequences of Blaming Chloe in Life is Strange

Chloe, Max, and David after blaming Chloe and David hits her in Episode 1 of Life is Strange

If players choose to blame Chloe for the weed in Life is Strange, David will hit her and Chloe will be very upset with Max. Blaming her also makes it impossible for the pair to fall in love with each other during the story. However, it does mean that it is impossible to get into trouble while making an important decision at the end of Episode 2, regardless of what decision Max made about reporting Nathan.

  • Chloe will not show Max the gun she took from David, and will be upset at the lighthouse at the end of Episode 1 in Life is Strange.
  • Max can't be suspended at the end of Episode 2 no matter what other decisions have been made.
  • The background of Chloe's phone will never change to Max, and they can not fall in love with each other, or kiss at the end of the game, no matter what other decisions are made.
  • The weed belonging to Chloe is brought up by Chloe's mom and David again.

Consequences of Taking the Blame in Life is Strange

Chloe, David, and Max after Max takes the blame for Chloe's weed in Life is Strange Episode 1

Taking the blame for Chloe's weed means David will shout at Max and threaten her position at Blackwell Academy, but Chloe will defend Max, and be very happy that she took the blame for her. As long as two other important decisions regarding Chloe are made by Max over the next few episodes, players can also choose to have the pair fall in love with each other by the end of the game.

It does become harder for Max to escape trouble at the end of Episode 2 of Life is Strange, however. Reporting Nathan and then accusing him at the end of the episode, or taking a photo of David and then blaming him instead, are the only ways to get her out of the predicament.

Taking the Blame SpoilersThe biggest consequences of the decision in Life is Strange to take the blame for Chloe's weed are:

  • Chloe will still not show Max the gun she took from David, but will be happy at the lighthouse at the end of Episode 1.
  • Max will be suspended if she accuses David of being responsible for Kate's suicide attempt without the photo of their confrontation.
  • Max will also be suspended if she accuses Nathan without previously reporting him to the principal.
  • The background of Chloe's phone can change to Max, and they can fall in love with each other and kiss at the end of the game as long as two other key choices are made.
  • The weed belonging to Max is brought up by Chloe's mom, and David again.

Should You Take the Blame or Blame Chloe?

This is one of the most important choices in Life is Strange if players care about the friendship and potentially romantic relationship of Max and Chloe. The spoiler sections above contain the full consequences of the decision, but in short, if players wish to see the duo fall in love with each other, they must take the blame for Chloe's weed.

If players only want to guarantee that Max doesn't get in trouble later in the story, then they should choose to blame Chloe instead. Theirs is a relationship that actually matters in a video game, so it's definitely worth considering the consequences of this decision.

That said, there are no right or wrong answers in the game, so feel free to shape Max's story in Life is Strange whichever players please when they are deciding whether to blame Chloe for the weed, or take the blame, in Episode 1.
