A new soulslike action-RPG titled Lies of P has been announced to be in development. Interestingly, the developers have said that Lies of P is based on the story of Pinocchio.

Lies of P is being developed by the studio behind MMO Bless Unleashed, Round8 Studio, and published by NeoWiz, publisher of popular rhythm game DJMAX Respect. Neither the developer or the publisher have worked on a soulslike action-RPG before, as Round8 Studio has only worked on Bless Unleashed and NeoWiz has published primarily mobile titles as well as Bless Unleashed. However, Lies of P is a full game release that is aiming to stand out from the genre.

One of the Lies of P's biggest hooks is having a unique system based on lying, which fits in well with the Pinocchio inspiration. Little detail has been shared about the feature as of yet, but the developers have said that what players do and say throughout the game will dynamically impact gameplay. The announcement also came with an announcement trailer, which the developers explained is narrated by someone other than the main character, and that it serves as a prologue to the events of the Lies of P. The developers also said that they aim for Lies of P to be able to stand up against the biggest soulslike games like Nioh 2 or The Surge.

The trailer preceding the story of the game makes a lot of sense, as it seems to show a character similar to Pinocchio's Gepetto coming to a large mansion and building an autonomous person similar to the character of Pinocchio. The trailer also gives a sneak peek at the game's setting, with reference to a plague as well as a gnarly visual of a rat climbing out of a man's throat. The setting also seems to be more clockwork-themed in a way that looks similar to the world of Dishonored.

It will be interesting to learn more about Lies of P as it is developed and more of the game is shown. Hopefully, the title will be able to avoid the pitfalls that many other soulslike titles make compared to Dark Souls and be a standout title in the genre. Its unique premise and interesting sounding lie mechanic definitely have the potential to make Lies of P something special. With E3 and Summer Game Fest coming next month, hopefully, gamers will get some more information sometime soon.

Lies of P is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
