LG has unveiled the LG UltraGear 27" 1440p 240Hz OLED Gaming Monitor, which could be a major step forward in a PC gaming digital display market struggling to shift to OLED screens. OLED televisions are widespread now, though affordability is another matter entirely. The larger panels used in OLED TVs haven't worked for traditional PC gaming monitors, though, making the transition slower than hoped. LG's 27-inch UltraGear could be the first in a wave of OLED monitors bringing the display technology to more PC gamers.

The new LG monitor is certainly not the first OLED monitor. LG itself offers a line of 27" and 32" UltraFine OLED displays, offering 4K resolution and 60Hz refresh rate for around $3,000 and $4,000 respectively. More widely available are TV-sized screens being advertised as PC gaming monitors, like Dell's Alienware 55" 4K 120Hz OLED, LG's popular 42" and 4K C2 TV, or the larger Sony A95. Curved OLED monitors have also found a niche, given their already lofty prices, as have smaller portable OLED monitors.

What the LG 27" UltraGear OLED Gaming Monitor offers is both the quality of an OLED screen combined with the high performance expected of a gaming monitor, all at a traditional PC monitor size. And, further, a surprisingly reasonable price at $999. The LG UltraGear offers 1440p resolution, a healthy 240Hz refresh rate, and a solid .03ms GtG response time. Further, LG's OLED panels have a color depth of 1.07B, though it isn't clarified if it's full 10-bit or 8-bit with FRC, HDR10, and a contrast ratio of 1,500,000:1.

For the price, it is a very straightforward monitor. While it's compatible with both G-Sync and FreeSync, the LG 27" UltraGear does not offer hardware-accelerated adaptive sync support. There's a DisplayPort and two HDMI ports. The stand, which does offer RGB lighting, offers just 20 degrees of swivel vertically and horizontally. It's the screen that gives the monitor its value and not necessarily its features.

To be clear, the LG 27" UltraGear OLED monitor is not currently available, but it's not too far off either. That LG is listing the monitor on its online shop with a price and with full specification details showing that this device could be nearly ready. It's expected to fully launch in 2023. Expect a specific date before long, perhaps as soon as CES 2023.

A $999 monitor is by no means going to bring high-performance OLED to the PC gaming masses. That's likely years off yet, and that's only if OLED technology isn't supplanted by something else that's cheaper and just as visually impressive. For high-end PC gamers, though, this is the first monitor that's at least reasonably priced and delivers a step up in visual quality many have been hungering for. The LG 27: UltraGear OLED Gaming Monitor may not be 4K resolution, but it's still a step forward. A 4K 32" OLED with a 240Hz refresh rate could be just a matter of time.
