Lewdle is a word game with the same mechanics as the popular Wordle. Players will have six tries to guess a word, getting contextual hints as to what it is after each guess. What sets Lewdle apart is its exclusively NSFW lineup of words.

Lewdle is a surprisingly challenging game, as compared to Wordle, there are far fewer words to choose from. Unless the player’s vocabulary is populated with salacious and risqué terms, the simple word game is sure to be a challenge.

Wordle, But Make It Lewd

Upon opening the Lewdle website, the player is greeted with a “How to Play” screen. On it is a quick explainer on the mechanics of the game — something Wordle players should already know — as well as a content advisory. The advisory very clearly states that the game features rude words, and if the player is uncomfortable with that, then it’s best to head over to Wordle instead.

The warning isn’t kidding, as examples of past Lewdle answers include words like, “daddy” and “booty,” but there are other words that are far more explicit, such as well-known slang terms for male and female genitalia. On the other hand, some Lewdle words are obscure, like “frots” or “quims.” Thus, suggestive as they may be, players can learn all sorts of new words from the game. In fact, guessing the word correctly brings up a link to its definition on Urban Dictionary.

On a more serious note, the developers have openly stated that they have no intention of adding slurs to the game. Creator of Lewdle Garry Whitta stated in a tweet, “We want the game to be dirty without actually being offensive to anyone.” Of course, this begs the question of who gets to decide which lewd words are offensive and which aren’t. Although, generally, the community reacted quite positively to this message.

Lewdle’s Growing Success

Unsurprisingly, the smutty word game has brought in plenty of players. On February 11, one of the creators tweeted that their game had over three million active users, which is massive, given that the game was created just this year. It also showcases the game’s skyrocketing numbers as the team had hit one million active users on January 28, and then two million on February 4. It seems the community was having fun with the NSFW word puzzles.

In another tweet, the creators share statistics on where Lewdle players come from. Lewdle players from America top the list, while those from the United Kingdom and Canada follow at second and third place, respectively. Given the number of players from the UK, it’s no surprise that the developers added British slang into the mix. Aside from these countries, there are also a considerable number of Lewdle players in India, Ireland, and New Zealand.

Lewdle’s growing player base also includes popular streamers like TimTheTatman and Pokimane, and even actors from the adult entertainment industry. Plus, with its numbers on the rise, it’s likely that the game will only continue to gain traction. However, with a finite number of NSFW words, keeping up the consistency may prove difficult. Even so, the developers reassure that they’re constantly adding to their lexicon of lewd.

It’s refreshing to see a spin-off of Wordle, and one that puts a unique twist on the original idea. This is especially the case after waves of Wordle clones flooded mobile app stores just last month. The difference between these clones and the likes of Lewdle is the fact that the latter is free — just impure, adulterated fun. No doubt the community is excited to see what lewd words will come up next.

Lewdle is now available for free, playable on the game's official website.
