Dungeon crawlers are about to get much tastier. Developer Level-5 has released a trailer for the Western localization of its game, Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl - Gold, which arrives on the Nintendo Switch in North America and Europe in time for Valentine's Day.

The game was originally released in 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS as The Snack World: Trejarers. When Level-5 released a Nintendo Switch port in Japan last year, the game served as both a conversion and a collection of all the improvements and expansion packs from previous years.

In the trailer, Level-5 sets up the game's setting, the Kingdom of Tutti-Frutti while also showing off the character customization options and randomized dungeons. Protagonists can face off against villains like Madusa, the Krapen, the Bandshees and the Fearnix. The developer also unveiled the various quest rewards like "Jaras" (weapons, shields and other healing items). As the game progresses, the player characters are tasked with obtaining as much loot as possible. The trailer ended by displaying the online and offline multiplayer capabilities the game had to offer.

Although some might question why Nintendo is localizing a two-year-old game, the decision actually makes sense when one considers the Snack World franchise's popularity in Asia. The franchise was introduced with an anime pilot back in 2015 before it gained more prominence in the following years. Alongside the original 2017 game's release, Snack World has spawned a toy line from a major Japanese manufacturer, two related manga series which ran from 2016 to 2018, a 2017 anime adaptation, and a popular South Korean mobile app spinoff.

When also considering that Level-5 is also responsible for the classic Professor Layton puzzle games, it becomes immediately clear that Level-5's existing portfolio and the warm Japanese reception to Snack World has allowed Nintendo to put its trust in the developer and the franchise.

Ultimately, fans of dungeon crawlers can be excited for a new addition to their collections. While Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl - Gold might not be the most innovative take on the genre, the game serves as a culmination of the multimedia franchise's work so far. It might serve as a strong entry point for casual fans who are waiting to be introduced to a fresh new series.

Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl - Gold is set to release on February 14, 2020 for the Nintendo Switch.
