Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has offered his fans the first look at his latest project Killers of the Flower Moon. On social media, DiCaprio posted an image of himself and his co-star Lily Gladstone in character, with just the hashtag #KillersOfTheFlowerMoon. The still from the Apple Original Film offers fans a glimpse of what Ernest and Mollie Burkhart will look like in Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of American journalist David Grann’s novel of the same name.

The Western drama, similar to the non-fiction novel, will follow the serial murders of the wealthy in Osage County in the 1920s. The brutal crimes, known as the Reign of Terror, occurred after oil deposits were found in the Osage Nation, with a complex plot hatched to slowly eliminate those who benefited the most from the discovery.

Filming on Killers of the Flower Moon began in April, with Scorsese stepping into the director’s shoes. The film will see DiCaprio’s Ernest as the nephew of a powerful rancher, played by Robert De Niro, whereas Gladstone’s Mollie will be a member of the Osage people. While cameras were supposed to begin rolling in March 2020, the film’s production has faced several delays due to the pandemic. But, with filming now underway, it has offered hope that the film should arrive soon. The Oklahoma-based Osage News has also shared some behind-the-scenes photos of the film’s sets, complete with vintage cars and actors in period costumes.

Fans expressed excitement at being able to see DiCaprio on the big screen again, with his last film being 2019’s Oscar-winning Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood. Many believed the actor looked unrecognizable in his new avatar. However, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn did not seem to agree, with a hilarious tweet that reads, “He must be the person on the left if he’s unrecognizable because the person on the right looks exactly like Leonardo DiCaprio.”

No release date has been set for the film yet, but Killers of the Flower Moon is expected to arrive in 2022. The film has also cast The Irishman actor Jesse Plemons as Tom White, an agent with the newly-formed FBI who was in charge of the investigation at the time. The supporting cast of the film includes Scott Shepherd, Pat Healy, Tantoo Cardinal, Michael Abbott Jr., and Gary Basaraba.

The prospect of seeing DiCaprio reunite with Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon is likely exciting to fans of both. The duo has previously collaborated on five features and one short and while DiCaprio won his first Academy Award for a non-Scorsese film in 2016, he did thank the acclaimed filmmaker in his acceptance speech for teaching him so much about cinema.

Killers of the Flower Moon is in the production stage at Apple TV Plus.
