Leisure Suit Larry Gets a HD Makeover

Larry Laffer: he can be viewed as either a triumph of narrative gameplay and comedic taboo adventure-gaming, or an example of what men are never supposed to do. The original series of Leisure Suit Larry games were mighty popular back in their day (the original game released in 1987) and spawned a great deal of follow-ups that have continued up until 2009, with the abysmal Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust.

Now we know for certain that the original series of games is going to be getting a makeover courtesy of Paul Trowe of Replay Games and original series creator Al Lowe. That's right, Leisure Suit Larry rides again, starting with Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, so get your cocoa butter and gold chains ready for action, it's time to... experience intimate times with women.

What's that? Don't think LSL is coming to your platform? Think again, as Replay Games is working to ensure that the game will be made available on every contemporary platform possible, including services like Steam and OnLive.

If you were a fan of the original Leisure Suit Larry series, it would be wise to make sure everyone picks it up once it releases. Should the game prove successful, Replay Games and Al Lowe will continue to work on the rest of the series and realize it in crisp HD with all new visual, audio, and gameplay components without alienating the original puzzles.

Sure, the original games were still an exercise of placing Larry in a puzzle, then solve it and most likely take a woman to bed in the process. However, later on in the series the developers pulled a twist, giving the player a 'Game Over' if they had not used protection with said women. Crude, yes, but at least it was trying to teach something.

The point-and-click adventure genre of games is far from dead. Telltale Games, for example is continuing to bring us new entries, most recently the Hector: Badge of Carnage trilogy, which is a blast from Episode 1 until you finish with Episode 3. The development house will also be bringing us a Jurassic Park adventure game soon that will be full of action.

What are your thoughts on Leisure Suit Larry? Does the flop of Duke Nukem Forever show that gamers have grown up, or is there still a market for low-brow gameplay?

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of Lounge Lizards releases in 2012 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and OnLive.
