The newly-released LEGO Super Mario set features nine different box sets, with one starter set priced at $60 and eight expansion sets of varying prices that can be added on to the starter set. Using the sets, users can build "levels" for the Mario LEGO figure and collect virtual coins. In addition to the various stage-themed sets, there are character bags that include more enemies for Mario to face-off against and four power-up sets for $10 each that let users give the Mario figure various power-ups such as the Fire Flower or Cat Mario. There's also a free LEGO Super Mario app that allows for advanced play with features like zoom and rotation tools for building levels and a safe forum for younger users to share ideas.

Just like in his video games, the Mario LEGO figurine is the star of this LEGO show. The figurine, which is packed with Bluetooth and motion/color-sensor technology, reacts to various bricks on the course by using voice lines, sound effects, and LCD screens in his eyes, mouth, and belly. If the claims about LEGO Super Mario being dropped thousands of times are to be believed, the Mario LEGO figurine is also pretty tough, and the technology inside should be safe from occasional abuse.
