LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has gotten a ton of attention partially because of its scope. Traveller's Tales has set out to make a bigger LEGO game than ever before, and from the looks of things, it's on track to accomplish that. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will combine all nine of the core Star Wars movies into one game, resulting in a LEGO game with a staggering 45 levels. Such a vast collection of films also means that The Skywalker Saga will have a huge library of playable characters, truly representing the length and breadth of the Star Wars universe in one game.

The overworld has also received a lot of attention for its size. Since players can explore the Star Wars galaxy freely in The Skywalker Saga, exploring about two dozen planets and moons featured in the films, it promises to be a truly staggering overworld that could hold vastly more content than the levels themselves. LEGO Star Wars fans may have overlooked a major part of the overworld's scale, however. While The Skywalker Saga's many planets definitely contribute a lot to the overworld's size, the player's ability to simply fly around in outer space could mean that the overworld is an even bigger entity than some have realized.

The Bounty of The Skywalker Saga's Overworld

From the moment Traveller's Tales told LEGO Star Wars fans what it had in mind for the next game's map, many were astounded. Previous LEGO games have allowed players to explore whole cities or visit parts of distant planets before, but the sheer number of worlds that The Skywalker Saga plans to include is staggering. Everything from Coruscant to Tatooine to Exegol will form some part of the world, and trailer suggest that players have a lot of freedom to roam these worlds, potentially needing mounts and vehicles to reach The Skywalker Saga's far corners quickly.

Those vehicles play a crucial part in fleshing out the overworld, however. Traveller's Tales plans to let players explore the space between planets by hopping into Star Wars spaceships and taking to the skies. If every planet and moon in The Skywalker Saga has a slice of outer space that players can fly around in, then there's vastly more room for Traveller's Tales to hide secrets and collectibles around every corner. It wouldn't be surprising to see asteroid mazes or space races that players can participate in while wandering the Star Wars galaxy.

What's more, Traveller's Tales has also said that it wants to give players opportunities to board other space ships. While exploring The Skywalker Saga's overworld, players might come across random encounters with warring factions battling in space. If players participate in one of these battles, then they can attack the flagship in an enemy fleet, then board that ship and explore it on foot. Previous games have allowed Star Wars fans to run around an Imperial Star Destroyer on foot before, but if The Skywalker Saga does so as a part of an already impressive overworld, then it'll take a long time for LEGO Star Wars fans to run out of things worth exploring.

The Skywalker Saga's Ambition is Good

The Skywalker Saga's series of delays certainly cause some concern for its progress in development, but for the time being, there's still hope that these ambitious spacefaring features will make it into the game. The large scope is one of The Skywalker Saga's biggest selling points, after all, so these space mechanics are a core part of the game's identity. If they do survive to release, then that's a great sign for the future of licensed LEGO games developed by Traveller's Tales. There's lots of other IPs out there that deserve world maps as expansive as this one, so hopefully The Skywalker Saga will set a new status quo for Traveller's Tales' work.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga releases in spring 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
