LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a grand retelling of the Star Wars storyline, recapping the events of all nine main series movies in LEGO form. But instead of just repeating what happened in the Star Wars movies, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga shakes things up with funny dialogue and slapstick comedy. The game's sense of humor is one of its defining characteristics, but the jokes aren't confined to just Star Wars.

There are plenty of funny Star Wars moments in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, but the game has also been getting attention for other references it makes. For example, one of the missions in The Phantom Menace section of the game is called "Better Call Maul," which is a direct reference to Breaking Bad and its spin-off series Better Call Saul. The Phantom Menace section also features Qui-Gon Jinn, who was played by Liam Neeson in the film, say dialogue from Neeson's Taken film series.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is clearly aimed at kids, so some may be surprised that it features jokes and references only adults would understand. This includes a nod to an early South Park episode all the way from Season 2 of the long-running animated sitcom.

Season 2 episode 14 of South Park, "Chef Aid," features a storyline in which famous attorney Johnnie Cochran employs the "Chewbacca Defense" to win legal battles. The Chewbacca Defense basically boils down to Cochran pointing out that it doesn't make sense for Chewbacca to hang out on Endor with Ewoks, and how it doesn't make sense for him to be bringing it up in court. It's meant to confuse the jury into ruling in favor of Cochran's client.

When players reach the Return of the Jedi portion of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, one of the missions in the level is called "Chewbacca Defence" in reference to this South Park episode. Of course, this is just one of many pop culture references hidden throughout the game, and considering all the different LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga character interactions there are, it's quite likely that more are waiting to be found.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has about 300 characters and numerous planets, so it's a rather sizable game to say the least. Fans should keep an eye out for more references like this while they're reliving the Star Wars story and smashing LEGO bricks.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
