During a weekend that offered up many major announcements about new Star Wars video games, the confirmation that a new LEGO Star Wars game is in development could have almost slipped through the cracks. The confirmation of the game was so casual that it may have been an accident.
The announcement came during The Star Wars Show Live! which was being streamed from the Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago. Matthew Wood, who has worked as a supervising sound editor on many Star Wars films and TV shows and has also done voice acting for the franchise, let the news slip during an interview on the stream.
Wood was speaking about the busy year for the Star Wars franchise, saying that he and the team at Skywalker Sound are working on projects like The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and a LEGO Star Wars game. An official announcement hasn't been made by LEGO Star Wars game publisher Warner Bros. Interactive but Skywalker Sound is an official Disney team which makes this game very likely.
On Reddit, where the clip of Wood confirming a new LEGO Star Wars game has been widely shared, a fan wrote that the sound editor had made the comment "randomly." It seems that few were expecting a new LEGO Star Wars game in a year of other Star Wars game releases. EA and Respawn Entertainment's single-player epic Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has a November release date and is expected to get most of the attention from Star Wars fans.
There is also the release of Star Wars Pinball, which arrives on Nintendo Switch later this year. DICE is planning more updates for Star Wars Battlefront 2 (released in 2017) as well, so fans of the sci-fi franchise have a lot to look forward to.
Wood's comment was incredibly brief and was really made in passing. So, fans are in the dark about what the game may offer them and which Star Wars movies it will look at. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker releases later this year and so the new LEGO Star Wars game could potentially feature the events of that movie and the others in the trilogy, such as LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Eurogamer also cites sources close to the game that the new LEGO Star Wars game will be the "ultimate" LEGO Star Wars game and may feature content from all of the movies. This has not been officially confirmed.
