Traveller's Tales reveals that the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of LEGO Marvel's Avengers will enjoy two free DLC packs based on Marvel films.

LEGO fans have been waiting a long time for LEGO Marvel's Avengers. The game was originally announced as a 2015 release along with LEGO Jurassic World, but is now set to release in a couple of week's time across a variety of platforms following a delay into 2016. While it will be available for pretty much every major gaming platform under the sun, it looks as though the definitive platforms for the game will be PlayStation consoles, as PS3 and PS4 owners will be gifted with free DLC.

PS3 and PS4 LEGO Marvel's Avengers owners will receive two free DLC packs come launch day. One pack will be based on the upcoming film Captain America: Civil War and the other will be based on the most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, Ant-Man. These will supplement the core game, itself based on the two Avengers films and more.

It sounds as though these packs will be fairly substantial DLC offerings. For example, the Captain America: Civil War pack will include characters from the movie, as well as alternate costumes for existing characters based on their appearance in the film. Some notable characters featured in the Captain America: Civil War pack include Black Panther, Crossbones, and Winter Soldier.

Meanwhile, the Ant-Man pack will feature a new level along with the additional characters. Those that download the Ant-Man pack can look forward to adding both Hank Pym and Scott Lang to their game, as well as Ant-Thony, the flying ant from the film, along with various other characters from the movie. Details on the level that is included with the Ant-Man pack remain scarce, but it will be based on the events of the movie, and won't pull inspiration from the comic books.

Usually when companies give away free DLC, it's nothing quite this substantial. It should go a long way in boosting the value of the game for PlayStation owners, but may have the unwanted side effect of making gamers on other platforms feel slighted. After all, why should they bother picking up the game when it offers significantly more content to users on another platform?

It's unclear at this point if PS Vita, Xbox, or Nintendo gamers will ever have the chance to get the DLC at any point in the future. It's possible that Traveller's Tales will sell the DLC packs for a profit on those platforms a few months after the game's release, but it seems unlikely that users on other platforms will be able to access it for free like PlayStation 3 and 4 owners.

In any case, this practice is certainly nothing new in the industry, and will probably never go away. Sony has been especially aggressive about console-exclusive content this generation, nabbing PS-exclusive content for DestinyBatman: Arkham Knight, and another of other big name releases. Judging by the PS4 sales numbers, it's a strategy that has paid off, and it won't be surprising to learn that LEGO Marvel's Avengers sold best on PS3 and PS4 when January's sales data is released next month.

LEGO Marvel's Avengers will be available on January 26th for 3DS, PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
