The upcoming LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham looks set to expand upon previous games in the series by broadening its horizons considerably. This comes in the form of an adventure that takes the Bat into space for his most monumental exploits yet — but also in the sheer amount of Batman content that has been packed into the game.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the character’s debut in an issue of ‘Detective Comics’ in 1939, and as such developers TT Games are doing their utmost to make sure as much of that history is represented in Beyond Gotham. From a level centered around the cult 60s TV show with voice work from Adam West to the Tumbler from Christopher Nolan’s more recent Dark Knight trilogy, LEGO Batman 3 looks to be a treat for Batman fans.
Even more so, it seems, for those who are playing on PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 — as those editions of the game will come with a free character DLC pack featuring some of the most popular heroes and villains from the beloved animated series Batman Beyond.
Set in a futuristic version of Gotham City, Batman Beyond ran from 1999 to 2001 and chronicled an elderly Bruce Wayne training a new Batman, the teenaged Terry McGinnis. Despite its relatively short run, the series was very well received by fans, and its inclusion in Beyond Gotham will no doubt be a tempting prospect for multi-console owners on the fence about which system to buy the game for.
Terry McGinnis’ high-tech Batman is the centrepiece of the package, but he’s flanked by the aged Bruce Wayne, ‘Jokerz’ gang member Bonk and Ace the Bat-Hound, amongst others. The full list of characters can be found in a PlayStation Blog post by the game’s director, Arthur Parsons.
As well as this free DLC, there will also be paid extras available via a season pass, as well as the wealth of content that we’ve come from the LEGO games in general. With both Beyond Gotham and next year’s Arkham Knight on the horizon, Batman fans certainly have a lot to look forward to in the run-up to the next big screen appearance of the World’s Greatest Detective in 2016.
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is set to swoop onto PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS, PC and iOS on November 11, 2014.
