The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace talked about the show's final season and what it means for fans of other Arrowverse shows—like Legends of Tomorrow—that were left hanging.

The Flash's final season is the last hurrah of the Arrowverse despite shows like Superman and Lois continuing. With that have come several reveals about who is and isn’t making cameo appearances to send off Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) in style, and the latest to join the guest list are the Legends of Tomorrow.

Although the Legends of Tomorrow will return in The Flash season 9, fans shouldn’t hold out hope that their story is getting wrapped up soon, even though it was Wallace's hope. “There was originally when I had hoped that we’d had 20 episodes, but my original concept was to have at least one—if not a two-parter—that wrapped up Legends of Tomorrow," Wallace told The Nerds of Color. "And you know, there will be a little crossover we get them back, we get them out of time jail, all these good things, Booster Gold, etc, etc. When we found out we only have 13 episodes, that was no longer possible."

Wallace explained that The Flash barely has time to deal with Barry and Iris, meaning a proper Legends of Tomorrow ending is not in the cards. “So unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to wrap up the Legends storyline which I know is very disappointing to the fans. It’s disappointing to me. But we just don’t have the bandwidth.” With all the final season guest stars, inevitably, some aren’t going to get their due by the end, but as fans of comic books know, nothing is forever, just until the next issue (or, in this case, episode) even if one never comes. “We’re still writing a series finale so you never know what could happen at the very end," Wallace added. "Hope does spring eternal, but I just want to put that over. All the Legends at least are all going to appear in an episode.”

It’s good information so fans of Legends of Tomorrow can check their expectations and let the final season of The Flash play out as the creators intended. The Flash is already bringing back several characters from the show's past, so fans are probably grateful any Legends are returning.

The Flash season 9 begins on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, on The CW.
