Riot Games' Legends of Runeterra hasn't seen the explosive popularity of either League of Legends or Valorant, or even Teamfight Tactics. Regardless, Riot remains as dedicated to the free-to-play card game as to the rest of its products. Proof of that is evident in the latest Legends of Runeterra announcement unveiling its Guardians of the Ancient expansion, coming to Legends of Runeterra on May 5.
Guardians of the Ancients will be Legends of Runeterra's latest mid-set expansion, the first of which since the release of the Empires of the Ascended set. Each set in Legends of Runeterra is followed by the release of three expansions. As the first of the set's expansions, Guardians of the Ancients should be substantive, building on the core themes of Empires of the Ascended with a variety of new Runeterra cards.
For the time being, none of Guardians of the Ancients' new cards have yet to be revealed. Riot notes that players can expect spoiler content for the expansion in the days to come, but in the meantime they will be able to break down Guardians of the Ancients' new animated trailer for clues. It features the Chronokeeper Zilean using time to meddle in multiple battles between Noxus and Ionia, shifting the balance toward Ionia.
The only base of comparison Legends of Runeterra players have for Guardians of the Ancients is the previous set's first expansion. Call of the Mountain included 40 new cards, as well as three new Legends of Runeterra champions. That may be a good base of expectation for Guardians of the Ancients, with the teaser trailer hinting at Malphite and Irelia being new champion additions.
