Since Legends of Runeterra first launched in April 2020 as a card game spinoff to the massively popular League of Legends, the game has introduced plenty of fan-favorite characters. Past updates and events have focused in on particular regions from the world of Runeterra, like this year's Freljord update introducing Udyr. The online collectible card game has also provided players with a variety of different ways to play between standard online matches and offline game modes like the popular Path of Champions. Now, the newest update introduces the menacing Shadow Isles to the game.

Legends of Runeterra officially unveiled the details for the "Darkin Saga: Awakening" expansion releasing on Wednesday, introducing players to the new mechanics and champions. The new update will feature the addition of eight characters previously within League of Legends with notable highlights including Kayn, Jax, Leona, and Diana. Both Kayn and Jax will bring with them new mechanics as well, with Cultist units letting you draw a Kayn after summoning three of them and Jax's Weaponmaster cards being playable in any deck regardless of region.

Alongside the champion-related card types like Weaponmaster and Cultist, Legends of Runeterra's newest update will also feature multiple other new card types and keywords. Equipment cards give boosts to a player's units and return to the hand when that unit is destroyed, with a once per round restriction. Some new units will also feature the "Auto-Equip" keyword, causing a character to automatically equip a weapon from the hand or the field. The new Improvise and Forge keywords also provide buffs to characters or weapons, like creating Equipment for unequipped characters or increasing a weapon's stats.

The Legends of Runeterra expansion will also see a variety of new cosmetics added to League of Legends' card game spinoff, themed around the titular Darkin and corruption. Pantheon, Taric, Diana, and Leona will all receive "Corrupted" skins as part of the update with new art, while Zoe will receive a Corrupted skin also featuring new VFX and animations. The update will also add two new boards for players to acquire based on Kayn's human form and his Darkin form, Rhaast.

Legends of Runeterra has been a major part of the ever-expanding League of Legends universe with a variety of new projects from Riot Games. Earlier this month, Riot confirmed its highly-anticipated League of Legends fighting game Project L would be free-to-play with more updates coming later this year. Riot Games is also confirmed to be working on a second season for League of Legends animated series Arcane with no confirmed release date. Legends of Runeterra's Darkin expansion will bring even more of League of Legends' massive and diverse roster to the card game.
