Bombs are an incredibly important part of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Bombs help players to kill enemies, solve puzzles, and open up paths into new areas. But unlike some other Zelda games in the franchise, Link can both throw and roll bombs in Skyward Sword HD.

How to Get Bombs in Skyward Sword

In order to start rolling bombs, players will first have to unlock the ability to use bombs in the first place. In order to fully utilize bombs, players will need to get a Skyward Sword HD bomb bag. There are several levels of upgrades for bomb bags, but players have to pick up the basic bag from The Earth Temple.

In the mini-boss room of the Earth Temple in Skyward Sword, Link will need to fight two Lizalfos. Once they are dead, a treasure chest will appear that contains a basic bomb bag. After that, Link can purchase a slightly better one and then later upgrade to the Medium bags, which hold 10 extra bombs, and Large bags, which holds 15 extra bombs.

How to Throw and Roll Bombs in Skyward Sword

Once players have the bomb bag, they can start picking bomb flowers whenever they see them, stuffing them in their bags with the B button. The number of bombs a player can hold will depend on the size of the bomb bag. The Large bomb bag is one of the best things in Skyward Sword HD, so players will want to try to upgrade to this large bag as soon as they can.

To throw a bomb at an enemy:

  • Press ZL to bring out a bomb from the bomb bag
  • Move the right stick until the bomb is aimed at the right location
  • Press ZL again to release and throw.

The process for rolling a bomb is basically the same, except player will need to aim at the floor instead of up at the target.

  • Press ZL to bring out a bomb
  • Move the right stick down
  • Press ZL to roll the bomb across the floor.

How to Throw and Roll Bombs with Motion Controls

The new controls in Skyward Sword HD are much better and more intuitive than the motion controls from the original version, and players should have a lot less trouble aiming, firing, and sword slashing in this new updated version. This should also make Link's bomb throwing and bomb rolling easier for motion control players as well. In order to do this, players need to:

  • Press the ZL bumper and hold it
  • Move the right Joy-Con in the direct a player wants to roll or throw the bomb
  • Move the Joy-Con upwards to throw, and downwards to roll
  • Release the ZL button while in motion
