The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword takes place long, long before the events of just about any other Zelda game. It has few references to the other games, aside from location names in some areas, but there are nonetheless secrets abound in this criminally underrated Zelda entry.

Finding secret locations is not always about just getting to a spot few others have. In the Zelda series, it's very common to find special items or unique events in these hard-to-reach spots. Sometimes it's a Heart Piece, and sometimes it's a new Bottle, but either way, it's nice to be rewarded for exploration – especially in a pretty linear game like this.

8 Zelda's Room at the Knight's Academy

Zelda Skyward Sword Room Knight Academy

To get into Zelda's room at the Knight Academy, the player will first need to gain the Double Clawshot, called the Clawshots in-game, from the Silent Realm. Then, get to the top of the Knight Academy by going left of the entrance and climbing up a series of platforms and vines.

On top, the player will see a chimney jutting out from the roof. Target the ceiling of this chimney and Link will grapple then drop down into the Academy. After crawling through a passageway the player will find themselves in Zelda's Room, which also houses a Gratitude Crystal and a Piece of Heart.

7 The Remlit Flower Field

Zelda Skyward Sword Remlit Goddess Statue

In Skyloft, Link can find a special field out of the way which is home to a bunch of Remlits that follow the player around. Head to the Goddess Statue, go left of the statue itself, and above you will see a target above a wall.

Use the Clawshots, once acquired, on this target to pull Link over the wall into a small meadow with a handful of adorable Remlits napping in a patch of flowers. Targeting them reveals special text, too.

6 The Moonlight Merchant

Zelda Skyward Sword Secret Locations Moonlight Merchant

The Moonlight Merchant is a rare NPC who will sell treasures to Link from around the game. He is summoned underneath the Waterfall Cave in Skyloft, but only at night. Play the Harp in this area to spawn the Moonlight Merchant instead of a regular Gossip Stone.

Its treasures include the Goddess Plume, Blue Bird Feather, the Evil Crystal, and a number of other useful items for upgrades. It can only be summoned about halfway through the game, though, after the Triforce Temple.

5 Image of the Medallions of the Six Sages

While this isn't necessarily located in a secret location, only the most observant players will pick up on this easter egg. When in the Sealed Temple, look to the ceiling to see a clear reference to the medallions of the Six Sages from Ocarina of Time.

While Ocarina of Time takes place long after Skyward Sword, it's nonetheless a neat inclusion for diehard Zelda fans to discover. It can only be found in the Sealed Temple after it is re-assembled, though, raising questions of Hyrulian lore.

4 The Pumpkin Landing Chandelier

Zelda Skyward Sword Pumpkin Landing

Inside the Lumpy Pumpkin in Pumpkin Landing is a noticeably large chandelier, with a very noticeable Piece of Heart resting on it. Although the owner says not to cause a ruckus in the tavern, the only way to get this Piece of Heart is to repeatedly roll into a support beam on the second floor, where he won't see Link.

However, upon breaking the chandelier, Link is conscripted into working off his newfound debt to the Lumpy Pumpkin owner. At the end of a series of tasks, the owner is so pleased that he gives Link another Piece of Heart

3 Bottle in the Fire Sanctuary...

After acquiring the Mogma Mitts from the Fire Sanctuary, head to the very first room of the dungeon which should have previously housed a single enemy. There is a gate that leads to an encounter as well as water plants.

After this, a new passageway should unlock at the ground level in the previous room that wasn't there before. Follow this short tunnel to find a secret chest containing a bottle!

2 ...And The Sky Bottle

Zelda Skyward Sword Missing Sister Island

Once Link has picked up the side quest Missing Sister from Parrow in Skyloft, he will be tasked with healing a Loftwing on an Island in the Sky. The island is otherwise unnoteworthy, being a flat, round island, but it's important for this quest alone.

Once Link has met up with the stranded Loftwing rider he will be able to use a Medicine item given to him to heal the Loftwing. Once the medicine is consumed, Link gets to keep the bottle and the Side Quest is completed (giving Link a few Gratitude Crystals too).

1 The Fairy Trapped In A... Volcano?

Zelda Skyward Sword Pink Fairy

To the southwest of Skyloft is a small island that by all appearances looks like a Volcano. If Link flies into the central cone of this volcano-like island, he will be greeted with a very refreshing sight: a Pink Fairy to capture and use for healing later.

Be sure to keep a bottle empty and your bug net at the ready when landing in this spot – it would be a shame to land and accidentally pick up the fairy instead of collecting it for later use, after all.
