There just doesn’t seem to be enough Zelda going around these days, despite the recent influx of content. Whether it’s demanding that Skyward Sword finally be released, dreaming of an HD game on the new Wii U, or even replaying an old favorite in the glorious third dimension, Zelda fans just can’t get enough. One of the creative forces behind the series has some good news, recently claiming in an interview that a remake of Majora’s Mask for the Nintendo 3DS isn’t out of the question, but would rely on fan support to become a reality.
The bulk of the interview with ZeldaInformer was obviously focused on Skyward Sword being the biggest Zelda title ever, but as is the case with Nintendo fans, the perfection and innovation of the past is never forgotten. It would be one heck of an understatement to say that The Legend of Zelda has a rich history of titles, and it’s truly mind-boggling to think of just how long the franchise has lasted.
The 25th anniversary of the Zelda series is something for everyone at Nintendo to be excited about, and Aonuma was asked how he would go about celebrating it. He said that he always wanted to help make a Zelda movie, but he had virtually no time to even begin thinking of such a project, and would always worry about how it would turn out. He certainly wouldn’t be alone on that.
When Aonuma was asked if Majora’s Mask would ever stand a chance of being given the same 3D release on the Nintendo 3DS as Ocarina of Time 3D, he didn’t dismiss the idea. There’s certainly a long way to go toward it becoming a reality, but anything short of a flat-out rejection is always a good thing:
“It’s been 13 years since Ocarina of Time was originally released, and one of the big things that we made this remake possible was that there was an outpour of emotions from people who said they would like to see this game done. We said we could do it in 3D, so we did. I think certainly if there was a similar output of emotion and clamor from fans for a remake of Majora’s Mask, it wouldn’t be an utter impossibility.
Thinking on it now, having a handheld Majora’s Mask where you could kind of just set things down on your own time – close it, set it aside and come back to it later – might be a game play element some fans will actually take to and might really appreciate. Especially considering how you really had to rush through the original game, in a sense.”
There’s no question that Majora’s Mask offered a unique play mechanic in its ‘countdown clock,’ and Aonuma is right that giving players a chance to experience the game in small pieces on a handheld device makes perfect sense. The theory worked for Ocarina, so hopefully if fans can get behind the idea of Majora’s Mask 3D, Nintendo might consider it more strongly.
