There's no doubt that collecting all 900 Korok seeds in Nintendo's open world adventure The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most daunting challenges to be implemented in a game in quite some time. With that being the case, most fans assumed that gathering each and every seed would net them a much more epic reward than what is essentially a pile of poop from the giant maraca-shaking Korok, Hetsu. Nevertheless, it seems as if the game's developers had a reason for gifting Link a handful of feces for the feat.

Following the Game Awards 2017, IGN had an interview with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, with the outlet asking why he and his team chose such a stinky prize to reward players for their Korok seed-collecting efforts. As Fujibayashi explained, “We just kind of thought it would be funny to make that a big joke. It's just the backstory, the kind of hidden kind of thing in the game the whole way is that the Korok seeds are actually Korok poop."

While the case of why players receive poop as a gift for gathering Korok seeds can now finally be settled, some might be interested to learn that Korok seeds initially weren't going to be in the game at all. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's director Hidemaro Fujibayashi explained as much prior to the release of the title's first DLC, stating that the team was originally considering placing secret rocks to be found around the map instead.

Bearing all of this in mind, learning why every Korok seed amounts to a pile of poop in Breath of the Wild now not only makes sense from a logical perspective, but also tickles the funny bone as well. And with the next Legend of Zelda game already in development, it begs the question how Fujibayashi and his team will explain the lore behind any other potentially silly items in the forthcoming title.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now for Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
