Even within the storied Legend of Zelda franchise, Skyward Sword is a fairly unique entry. This comes down to not only its reliance on motion controls but its airborne setting as well. Most of these fantasy adventure titles depict Hyrule and its citizens on the ground like any other kingdom. In this tale, society instead lives in the clouds, flying from place to place with birds and their loyal steeds.

At the end of the day, though, the core Legend of Zelda experience remains the same. That means plucky protagonist Link must save the world from the forces of evil and help out those in need. Even with this familiar formula, however, Skyward Sword (and its HD remaster) holds a few surprises. Players willing to engage with the quirky world may find more oddball antics than they expected.

10 Fun Fun Island

Near Skyloft lies a magical place where players can get rich quick. It's basically the Hyrule version of a casino. A few rupees will let Link go skydiving then eventually land on a spinning floor, and landing on the right space can potentially double or triple the number of rupees he walks away with. Pulling this off is easier with Joy-Con controls than with the old Wiimote.

For those craving more adventure, the island's owner desires a party wheel to complete the experience. Retrieve it from the Lanayru Desert, and the guy gives 5 Gratitude Points. At the end of the day, though, the main attraction is the gambling.

9 Rickety Coaster

Adventure games rarely encourage players to look back unless it's for level-grinding. That's why it's so surprising that such a wild ride hides behind the completed desert dungeon. After finishing up the Sandship area, Link can revisit it to ride a minecart roller coaster.

Those daring enough to try the "Heart-Stopping" track can aim for the record: 1 minute and 5 seconds. Whoever can beat this time will receive a Heart Piece as a reward. Whichever track players pick, they'll be sure to emerge exhilarated and slightly nauseous.

8 The Haunted Restroom

For such a silly side quest, this tale is surprisingly complex. First, Link must speak with the right people in the Bazaar and the Knight Academy to initiate the problem. Then, the hero must experience the ghost for himself when he uses the restroom.

Additionally, finding the required item opens up two ways to complete the quest. Depending on the outcome, a soapy love triangle could ensue. Yes, the hero of Hyrule plays both Ghostbuster and matchmaker in one storyline. The developers clearly weren't afraid to get weird with their side content, but "weird" doesn't necessarily mean "bad."

7 Pumpkin Island

You break it, you buy it. Link doesn't account for vandalism in his pursuit of a Heart Piece, but knocking down a chandelier on Pumpkin Island will cause an uproar from the owner. He'll insist the hero perform a bunch of odd jobs to pay for the damages.

These may not seem worth players' time. After all, they're just mundane tasks like delivering soup and carrying pumpkins. However, this is worth it not just for the amusement of seeing Link carry out such bitter work, but also for the Heart Piece he receives upon completion. Plus, continuing the harp minigame after the quest will net him additional rupees depending on his score.

6 Missing Baby Rattle

Children sure are a lot of work, especially when they're someone else's. Link learns that when Bertie, the husband of the potion shop owner, enlists his aid in placating his baby by retrieving a rattle.

This is more exciting than it sounds. To even accept the quest, Link must speak to Bertie in a clandestine nighttime meeting. Then, he must ascend the islands with the Clawshot and skydive toward a bird's nest atop Skyloft's main windmill. Blowing off the nest with the Gust Bellows lets Link collect the missing rattle. That's quite a trek for such a simple request.

5 Missing Sister

While most side quests only award 5 Gratitude Points, this one offers 10. Link satisfies two parties, so he gets double the reward. A man named Parrow in the Light Tower is searching for his lost sister, who took off for a floating rock near Fun Fun Island. The reason for her continued presence here is her concern for an injured Loftwing.

To heal this injury, simply fetch some Mushroom Spores. Sure, it's a fairly straightforward fetch quest, but it gives players the satisfaction of helping a majestic animal in need. For more monetary minds, both siblings gift Link some Gratitude Points for fulfilling their goals. Now, that's hitting two birds with one stone.

4 Lightning Round

Bosses are some of the major highlights of any game, challenging players to overcome their colossal challenge through skill and strategy. The Legend of Zelda bosses are no exception, and the Skyward Sword developers knew that. That's why they included a Boss Rush for eagle-eyed players and worthy contenders.

After his resurrection, the Thunder Dragon of Lanayru Gorge allows Link to fight any of the bosses he's previously vanquished. These back-to-back encounters test gamers' ingenuity more than any other quest. Making things tougher is the random order of the battles. This is a great find for those who just can't get enough Skyward Sword, as it provides an exciting post-game obstacle that only Hyrule's best can conquer.

3 Item Check Crush

Zelda isn't the only woman after Link's heart. The hero can also pursue a romance with Peatrice, the daughter of the Bamboo Island operator. However, it's not a side quest that can be completed in one fell swoop. Like most romances, it unfolds over time.

Link must converse and flirt with Peatrice for several days. This means sleeping between conversations to illustrate the passage of time. Keeping this up will eventually lead the Item Check girl to call Link her "darling." Reciprocating her feelings will yield 5 Gratitude Crystals. Alternatively, meaner players can break up with her and get 5 Gratitude Crystals from her dad.

2 Strange Plant Wanted

Oolo in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

This is another quest that satisfies two parties, albeit with only 5 Gratitude Crystals this time. To begin with, Instructor Owlan of the Knight Academy wants a new plant for research. He doesn't want just any plant, however. He requests a weird and unusual specimen to fuel his studies.

Link knows the perfect plant: Oolo of Faron Woods. It turns out this Kikwi is tired of living in the forest and wants a more secure place to call home. After hearing the situation, he's more than happy to relocate to Knight Academy. It's a win-win outcome.

1 Cleaning Pipit's House

Those seeking a greater reward for their efforts won't turn down the less glamorous work. Entering Pipit's house in the evening (which isn't creepy at all) will put Link in contact with the racer's mom, who wants someone to clean the place. Giving it a quick once-over with the Gust Bellows will earn 5 Gratitude Crystals and a red rupee.

Naturally, the house eventually gets dirty again. Cleaning it then is worth another red rupee each time, which can be an effective way of grinding money. If this whole world-saving gig doesn't work out, at least Link has a steady source of income.
