With rumblings that a Nintendo Direct will take place on January 11, rumors have been swirling about Nintendo and its upcoming games. There have been a couple of rumors surrounding Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda franchise, with one claiming that a remake of Link's Awakening is in the works for Nintendo 3DS. The latest Zelda-centric rumor, meanwhile, has to deal with the Nintendo Switch, and it claims that The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is being ported to the console.

This rumor has come about thanks to actions taken by Nintendo itself. Apparently, various news outlets have been contacted by Nintendo, with the company asking permission to use pull-quotes from old reviews of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Nintendo has not yet revealed why it is interested in these quotes, but the running theory is that it's to market a port of the game for the Switch.

Another possibility is that Nintendo is planning to re-release the 3DS version of the game, but that seems unlikely. Nintendo's support of the 3DS seems to be fizzling out as the company directs more resources to the Switch, and so re-releasing the game on 3DS seems rather pointless. It would make more sense to bring A Link Between Worlds to the Switch as a way to bolster the console's growing library of games.

Not only that, but bringing The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds to the Switch could be a good way for Nintendo to keep Zelda fans satisfied as they wait on news on Breath of the Wild's successor. We know that a new Zelda game is in development, but it could be years before we see anything of it. A port of A Link Between Worlds could fill in the gap without posing a huge cost to Nintendo.

Of course, it's possible that Nintendo is not interested in bringing A Link Between Worlds to the Nintendo Switch at all, and it is asking for these old pull-quotes for another reason entirely. What that reason could be remains unclear, but if rumors about a Nintendo Direct on January 11 turn out to be true, perhaps we will learn more then.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is available now for Nintendo 3DS, and is rumored to be in development for Nintendo Switch.
