For the past week, rumors have been swirling about Nintendo hosting a major Nintendo Direct on January 11. Nintendo still has yet to confirm or deny if such an event is in the works, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from turning. The latest rumors surrounding the supposed January 11 Nintendo Direct have to deal with The Legend of Zelda franchise, and claim that the next game in the series will be a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for 3DS.

According to the rumors, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is being remade for the 3DS with an open world style more reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The project is reportedly being handled by Grezzo, the studio Nintendo has contracted in the past to work on handheld Zelda games, including the remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.

This latest rumor comes from Marcus Sellars, a writer for various Nintendo-themed online publications that has made some big claims about the supposed January 11 Nintendo Direct in the past. As some may recall, Sellars is the person who said that Metroid Prime 4 would be shown during the Nintendo Direct, and that it would be revealed that the game is being co-developed with Bandai Namco.

Link's Awakening

So the question is, can we trust Sellars? Unlike some other recent video game news leakers, Sellars doesn’t have as much of a history of accurately leaking information. Because of this, it’s harder to take him as seriously as others, but we’ll know soon enough if he can be trusted. If a Nintendo Direct does take place on January 11 as he claims and if the information he has leaked comes to pass, then Sellars will have proven that he has some kind of inside knowledge of Nintendo.

Until then, fans should take what Sellars says with a massive grain of salt. After all, Nintendo seems to be phasing out the 3DS in favor of the Nintendo Switch, and if Nintendo wants to reach its goal of selling 20 million Switch units in 2018, it will need to release as much high quality software for the console as possible.

Even so, Sellars’s claims do make some bit of sense. Grezzo has a history of remaking Zelda games with Nintendo, as well as working on original releases like Tri Force Heroes. It’s also easy to believe that if a Link’s Awakening remake is in development that it would feature an open world environment like Breath of the Wild, as Nintendo has indicated that future Zelda games will follow in that game’s footsteps.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is available for Game Boy and Game Boy Color.
