The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is fondly remembered by many Nintendo fans as one of the best open-world games to be produced by the company in recent memory. Giving players almost complete freedom in how they want to tackle the story and setting of Breath of the Wild, the game gave players an experience they wouldn't soon forget. However, something that a lot of fans believe could've enhanced the game is the ability to play it with friends.

While it doesn't seem like an official multiplayer mode for Breath of the Wild will be coming anytime soon since Nintendo appears fully focused on Breath of the Wild 2, modders have given fans an unofficial way to play the game with their friends. Specifically, a modder known as Kirbymini has put together a multiplayer mod for Breath of the Wild, recently displaying their work in a video and revealing a release date for when Hyrule can have four heroes running around its landscape.

Kirbymini begins by showing off the split screen co-op ability of their multiplayer mod, with the video having the perspective of two different players at the same time. The game runs well as both players dash into the endgame area of Breath of the Wild at Hyrule Castle. As both players tackle the enemies there, the mod shows opponents' health bars taking damage from the two Links, while even allowing players to experience the same slowed time. This splitscreen version of this impressive mod will be available July 29.

This doesn't necessarily mark the first time Breath of the Wild has received a multiplayer mod. Content creator PointCrow issued a challenge to the internet last November to bring multiplayer to the game, and the internet responded with plenty of attempts to allow friends to adventure around Hyrule together. What Kirbymini's mod does seem to mark, though, is the first time split screen co-op has been brought to Breath of the Wild.

Unfortunately, this Breath of the Wild mod is unavailable for use on official Nintendo hardware. Instead, it is accessible through an online emulator that brings Wii U titles to PC. This is the case for most mods of Breath of the Wild, which include plenty of other alterations to the beloved game. The Second Wind mod for Breath of the Wild, for example, aims to bring a whole host of new content to the game, such as new enemies and an Octo Boss battle.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now for Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
